Mauritius

Mauritius is located east of Madagascar and is famous for its white sandy beaches, turquoise lagoons, and clear, warm waters. The island offers perfect conditions for swimming, snorkeling, and diving, especially along the west and north coasts, where the sea is usually calm.

Beyond the beaches, Mauritius impresses with its diverse landscapes. In the lush highlands, you’ll find tea plantations, waterfalls, and viewpoints offering panoramic island views. A true highlight is the Black River Gorges National Park, with hiking trails through tropical forests and a wide variety of bird species.

For those interested in culture, Mauritius reflects a fascinating blend of influences from India, Africa, France, and Britain. Small temples, colonial houses, and local markets provide a glimpse into the everyday life of the island’s residents.

Mauritius is perfect for both relaxing beach holidays and active exploration. Whether you’re discovering nature, taking a boat trip to Île aux Cerfs, or spending a day in the highlands, the island offers countless ways to explore it at your own pace.

SIM Card in Mauritius

We purchased a SIM card immediately after our arrival at Mauritius Airport. The sales counters of Emtel and Mauritius Telecom (My.T) are located right in the arrivals area and are easy to find. This allowed us to go online, send messages, and plan our excursions immediately after landing.

Our Plan & Provider

We chose Emtel. They offered a very convenient tourist package:

  • Unlimited data and SMS

  • 200 MUR credit for calls

  • Valid for 30 days

  • Price: 1,500 MUR (approx. €28)

Activation was completed on site within a few minutes and was very straightforward.

SIM or eSIM
Both Emtel and Mauritius Telecom (My.T) allow you to choose between a physical SIM card or an eSIM. This is especially convenient if your smartphone does not have a second SIM slot or if you want to keep your German number.

Network Coverage & Tip
The network of both providers is very reliable across Mauritius, and we had signal almost everywhere, even in more rural areas. SIM cards are also available in supermarkets or official stores, but purchasing directly at the airport is the most convenient option.

Driver’s License in Mauritius

Validity: The German driver’s license is recognized.

International driver’s license: Not required.

Drones in Mauritius – Rules, Tips & Important Information

Mauritius, the island nation in the Indian Ocean, entices with beautiful beaches, green mountains, and paradisiacal landscapes. • Application for authorization (open category, specific category, or legal entity/LUC) – usually, only the open category is relevant for recreational pilots

Applications must be sent by email to civil-aviation@govmu.org. A fee may apply (check with the authority for details).

Authorization: Flights in certain areas, such as populated locations or security-sensitive zones, may require separate authorization.

Insurance

Drone insurance is mandatory for private and commercial flights. We recommend obtaining appropriate drone insurance.

Drones must be marked with the Operator ID to allow clear identification if needed.

Our First Trip to Mauritius (September 2025)

In September 2025 we were finally able to make another dream come true: Mauritius. For sixteen nights we experienced the incredible diversity of this island in the Indian Ocean. Beautiful beaches, tropical landscapes and a relaxed island atmosphere made our trip unforgettable.

Our route took us to three different locations: first to Mont Choisy / Trou aux Biches on the northwest coast, then to Flic en Flac on the west coast and finally along Royal Road near Grand Gaube in the north (the northern coastal area near Anse La Raie). This allowed us to explore different parts of the island and truly experience its scenic variety.

We were especially impressed by the stunning beaches, the diverse nature and the warm, welcoming atmosphere of the island. Every day brought new experiences, from relaxing by the sea and visiting colorful markets to exploring waterfalls and the fascinating Seven Coloured Earths in Chamarel. Mauritius completely captivated us with its unique mix of nature, tranquility and adventure, an island you simply have to experience for yourself.

Mauritius, the pearl of the Indian Ocean, offers a perfect mix of stunning beaches, lush landscapes and cultural diversity. The island is ideal for anyone who wants to combine nature, relaxation and a variety of activities.

In this section, we’ll show you:

Getting to Mauritius

Airline: Turkish Airlines
Cost: Around €860 (including checked baggage)
Duration: Approximately 14–15 hours (including a layover in Istanbul)

Our journey to Mauritius began in Frankfurt with Turkish Airlines. After about a 3-hour flight, we arrived in Istanbul for a short layover before continuing our trip toward the Indian Ocean. The onward flight to Mauritius took around 9 hours, and during the approach, the island already revealed its stunning beauty – turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and lush green hills.

Upon arrival, we were greeted by a representative from the car rental company holding a sign with our name. We picked up our rental car directly at the airport, which was quick, easy, and perfect for exploring the island independently and flexibly.

Getting Around Mauritius

There are several ways to explore the island:

  • Car: Ideal for traveling flexibly and independently.
  • Scooter: Great for short distances and easy to park.
  • Bus: Very cheap, with many stops and frequent routes. Tickets can be bought directly from the driver.
  • Shared taxi: Slightly more expensive than the bus (around €0.50 per ride) but faster and still very affordable.

A rental car is the best option to explore Mauritius flexibly. We had a Toyota Vitz (automatic), which we picked up directly at the airport, where a rental company employee was waiting for us with a sign.

Details:
Price: around €27 per day
Duration: 16 days
Insurance: Full coverage with no deductible
Fuel policy: Full to full
Full tank: around €35, which lasted for the entire trip

Driving in Mauritius:
Left-hand traffic, but easy to get used to
Roads are generally in good condition

Cost
€63 per night

Positive

  • Central location in Flic en Flac

Negative

  • Very noisy; you can hear neighbors talking, eating, and washing dishes

Conclusion
For a short stay, the apartment is acceptable, mainly due to its location and security. For a longer vacation, however, we would not recommend it, as comfort is significantly affected by noise and water issues.

Lagoon Attitude Hotel

Location
The hotel is situated on the northeast coast of Mauritius in Anse La Raie, right by the sea with stunning views of the lagoon. The property is spacious, well-maintained, and ideal for those looking to combine relaxation with activities.

Cost
We paid €239 per night for half board

Negative

  • Reservations are generally required for à-la-carte restaurants, except for the main buffet restaurant. Unfortunately, no reservations were available during our entire stay, so we could only dine at the buffet restaurant.

  • Some activities, such as snorkeling and kayaking, require prior booking. During our stay, both were fully booked, and we only got a spot for the snorkeling trip on the day of check-out. However, the boat departed 15 minutes early without us and two other guests – really disappointing, as we had been looking forward to it.

Conclusion
Lagoon Attitude Hotel offers a great mix of relaxation, comfort, and activities, perfect for a varied stay. Despite minor organizational issues with reservations, our stay was thoroughly enjoyable, and we would happily recommend the hotel.

The Best Beaches on Mauritius

During our time in Mauritius, we visited many beaches across the island, in the north, west, south, and east. Each stretch of coast has its own charm, from long, fine sandy beaches to wild, untouched areas. In this section, we present our most beautiful beaches in Mauritius, places that captivated us with their variety, turquoise waters, and relaxed island atmosphere.
Trou aux Biches

Location:
Trou aux Biches is located on the northwest coast of Mauritius, about 10 km north of Grand Baie. The beach is easily accessible by car or taxi and lies in a quiet coastal area with shallow water, ideal for swimming and relaxing.

Beach:
The beach stretches for several kilometers and offers fine, light sand. The water is shallow and clear, perfect for snorkelers.

Street Food & Atmosphere:
We especially enjoyed the street food stalls along the beach. You can try fresh snacks and local specialties, a great addition to a relaxing beach day.

Activities:
Various water sports can be enjoyed at the beach, such as snorkeling, kayaking, or paddleboarding. For short trips, boats can be rented for brief excursions.

Our Impression:
For us, Trou aux Biches was the favorite beach in Mauritius. The water was calm and clean, the sand fine, and the food at the stalls a real highlight. Despite its popularity, the beach never felt overcrowded and was perfect for relaxing.

Tips:
Remember sun protection and drinking water.
Bring a towel or beach mat, as loungers are sometimes charged.

Conclusion:
Trou aux Biches combines shallow, clear water, fine sand, a relaxed atmosphere, and delicious street food for us, the perfect spot for an unforgettable beach day in Mauritius.

Flic En Flac Beach

Location:
Flic en Flac is located on the west coast of Mauritius, about 25 km south of Port Louis. The beach is easily accessible by car, bus, or taxi, with plenty of parking nearby. The area has numerous hotels, restaurants, and small shops, making it perfect for a relaxed beach day with everything you need.

Beach:
Flic en Flac Beach is one of the longest beaches on the island, stretching for several kilometers along the coast. The sand is slightly coarser than at beaches like Trou aux Biches, but clean and well-maintained. The water is clear and calm, and the offshore reef makes it ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Street Food:
Along Flic en Flac Beach, there are several street food stalls offering Mauritian snacks, drinks, and small dishes. Most of these stalls are located in the northern part of the beach, where you’ll find a good selection at fair prices. The southern section, just before the hotels start, has fewer vendors, and those we tried were more expensive and didn’t impress us taste-wise. Overall, it’s worth heading to the northern part of the beach for the best street food.

Activities:
The beach offers plenty of leisure options: snorkeling, diving, kayaking, or simply long walks along the shore. Small boat tours are also available on site.

Our Impression:
We loved Flic en Flac for its lively atmosphere, clear water, and stunning sunsets. The sand is not quite as fine as at Trou aux Biches, but the beach impresses with its length, variety, and opportunities to enjoy authentic street food along the way.

Tips:

  • Especially beautiful at sunset, when the sky turns spectacular colors.

  • Quieter during the week than on weekends.

  • Water shoes can be useful in some areas, as the seabed is rocky in places.

Conclusion:
Flic en Flac offers the perfect mix of relaxation and activity. The beach impresses with its clear lagoon, diverse activities, tasty street food, and inviting atmosphere, a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience Mauritius authentically.

Le Morne

Location:
Le Morne is located in the southwest of Mauritius, at the foot of the impressive Le Morne Brabant mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The beach is easily accessible by car, and like almost everywhere on the island, there is plenty of free parking nearby.

Beach:
Le Morne Beach is one of the most beautiful on Mauritius. It is spacious, peaceful, and offers a breathtaking view of Le Morne Brabant. The sand is light and fine, and the water is crystal clear, perfect for swimming or strolling along the coast. Thanks to the offshore reef, the sea is usually calm, ideal for bathing and snorkeling.

Activities:
Le Morne is great for stand-up paddling and snorkeling. With its clear water and diverse underwater life, it’s perfect for enjoying nature. Walking along the coast is also highly recommended, as the scenery is simply stunning.

Our Impression:
We were impressed by Le Morne Beach’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Despite its popularity, it never felt crowded and offered plenty of space to enjoy the surroundings. In the late afternoon, when the sun slowly sets behind the mountain, the atmosphere becomes truly magical.

Conclusion:
Le Morne is a true highlight of Mauritius, a stunning beach with spectacular scenery, crystal-clear water, and a serene atmosphere. For us, it was one of the most beautiful spots on the island, perfect for relaxing, snorkeling, and simply taking in the view.

Belle Mare

Location:
Belle Mare is located on the east coast of Mauritius, about an hour’s drive from Port Louis. The beach is easily accessible by car, and like almost everywhere on the island, there is plenty of free parking nearby.

Beach:
Belle Mare Beach is one of the longest and most beautiful on the island. The fine, light sand and crystal-clear turquoise water make it an absolute highlight. The sea is particularly calm and shallow here, perfect for swimming and relaxing. The many palm trees provide natural shade and add to the beach’s paradisiacal atmosphere.

Activities:
Belle Mare is ideal for swimming, snorkeling, or taking leisurely walks along the kilometers-long coastline. Stand-up paddling is also possible, with the calm water providing perfect conditions. Those who prefer to relax can simply lie on the shore and enjoy the view.

Our Impression:
We were impressed by Belle Mare Beach’s incredibly clear water and its peaceful, relaxed atmosphere. Despite its size, it never felt crowded, and it was easy to find quiet spots to unwind. The water shimmers in every shade of blue, simply breathtaking!

Conclusion:
Belle Mare is a perfect destination for anyone who loves peace, wide open spaces, and turquoise waters. For us, it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and simply enjoying the scenery.

Pereybere Beach

Location:
Pereybere Beach is located in the north of Mauritius, between Grand Baie and Cap Malheureux. The beach is easily accessible by car, but parking is limited, especially on weekends when finding a spot can be difficult.

Beach:
Pereybere Beach is a rather small, compact beach with fine sand and clear water. The sea is calm and ideal for swimming. While the beach is nice, it does not quite match the landscape and atmosphere of beaches like Trou aux Biches or Belle Mare.

Streetfood:
There are a few streetfood stalls directly on the beach offering fresh juices, snacks, and typical Mauritian dishes. The food is tasty and affordable, perfect for a small bite between swims.

Our Impression:
Pereybere Beach is a nice spot for a short stop or a half-day visit. The water is clear and pleasant, and the streetfood stalls give a real island vibe. However, the beach is smaller and busier than many others on Mauritius.

Conclusion:
A nice, centrally located beach with good streetfood and a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for a short visit. For those looking for longer, quieter beaches, other spots on the island offer more space and tranquility.

Mon Choisy

Location:
Mont Choisy Beach is located on the northwest coast of Mauritius, between Trou aux Biches and Grand Baie. The beach is easily accessible by car or bus and offers plenty of free parking along the coastal road.

Beach:
The long, gently curved beach is lined with numerous Casuarina trees, which provide pleasant shade. The sand is light, though not as fine as at some other beaches on the island. The water is calm and clear, ideal for swimming or a leisurely walk along the shore.

Atmosphere:
Mont Choisy has a relaxed, rather quiet atmosphere. On weekdays it is usually very peaceful, while on weekends more locals come to picnic or enjoy the sunset.

Our Impression:
Although Mont Choisy did not impress us as much as some other beaches on Mauritius, it was still nice in its own way. The calm surroundings, clear water, and shady trees create a pleasant, relaxed vibe.

Conclusion:
A spacious, shaded beach with clear water and a relaxed atmosphere – not a highlight of the island, but still a lovely spot to escape the crowds and enjoy nature.

Our Impression
Very friendly staff and really good pizza! This pizzeria is very popular in town and often quite busy, no surprise given the quality. We were told right away that the pizza would take about 50 minutes, which was totally fine. It gave us time to take care of a few things while we waited.

What’s especially convenient: you can eat your pizza on-site, order it to take away, or even place your order via WhatsApp. If you leave your number, they’ll send you a message as soon as your pizza is ready, great service!

Activities in Mauritius

Mauritius is a tropical paradise full of adventure and natural beauty. Between turquoise sea and green mountains, unforgettable experiences await you: the fascinating Seven Colored Earth in Chamarel, a spectacular scenic flight over the underwater waterfall, colorful snorkeling in coral reefs and relaxing hours on the island’s beautiful beaches.

On land, Mauritius has a lot to offer as well, from visits to vanilla and spice plantations to hikes in Black River Gorges National Park and the warm Creole lifestyle. This island combines nature, pleasure and adventure in a unique way.

Seven Coloured Earth and Chamarel Waterfall

Location & Route

The Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel are located in the southwest of Mauritius, surrounded by green hills and tropical vegetation. From Flic en Flac, you can reach this natural wonder in about 40 minutes by car.

Visit & Experience

On site, you will find a fascinating landscape of hills in various shades, from red and brown to violet and blue. We had imagined the colors to be a bit more intense than they actually were, but the natural phenomenon is still impressive and definitely worth a stop. A wooden walkway leads to the best viewpoints and is perfect for photos.

Entrance

The entrance fee (approx. 250–300 MUR / 5–6 €) also includes access to the Chamarel Waterfalls, which drop about 100 meters, as well as a small turtle enclosure home to some of the giant Aldabra tortoises. There is also a cozy café and a souvenir shop with local products on the site.

Tip

Visit the Seven Coloured Earths in the morning when the sun is high and the colors are most vivid.

Tour and Rum Tasting at Rhumerie de Chamarel

Location & Route

The Rhumerie de Chamarel is located in the green southwest of Mauritius, just a few minutes from the Seven Coloured Earth. From Flic en Flac, you can reach the distillery in about 40–45 minutes by car. The drive takes you through gentle hills, sugarcane fields, and tropical landscapes, offering a real taste of authentic Mauritius.

Visit & Experience

The estate is beautifully designed and surrounded by sugarcane fields.

No reservation is required, so you can just show up. Usually, there is a waiting time of about 20 minutes at reception before the tour starts. During the tour, you get fascinating insights into rum production, from sugarcane processing to distillation and bottling.

Unfortunately, during our visit it was quite busy, and due to the noise from visitors and machines, we could only partially follow the guide’s explanations. The rum tasting afterward included several varieties, from white and golden rum to flavored options. Personally, we didn’t enjoy the rum quite as much as at other tastings, but of course, that is a matter of taste. Overall, the visit is still highly recommended because of the beautiful estate and the atmosphere.

Parking

There are plenty of parking spaces on site, but when we visited around noon, it was very busy, and we were lucky to find a spot. Alternatively, you can safely park on the side of the road.

Admission

The entrance fee is Rs 650 per person (approx. 12 €) and includes the guided tour of the distillery and the rum tasting.

Opening Hours

Monday to Saturday: 09:30 – 16:30
Sunday: closed

Tip

Visit the Rhumerie preferably in the morning or early afternoon when it’s less crowded. Afterwards, it’s worth stopping at the on-site restaurant L’Alchimiste, known for its fresh, local dishes and views over the sugarcane fields.

Plantation Vanille St Julien D'Hotman

Location & Route

The Plantation Vanille St Julien D’Hotman is located inland in Mauritius, among the green hills of the Moka region. From Flic en Flac or Curepipe, the plantation can be reached in about 30–40 minutes by car.

Visit & Experience

Visits can be booked online. The guided tour costs around 8.50 € per person and offers interesting insights into the cultivation and processing of vanilla, spices, fruits, and vegetables.

The estate is smaller than we had expected, but it still provides plenty of fascinating information about local plants and their uses.

At the end of the tour, we received several samples: freshly pressed sugarcane juice, a variety of homemade jams, and small coconut balls. The preparation of the jams was also demonstrated on site. Afterwards, the tour led to the souvenir shop, where the products presented during the tour, as well as vanilla, spices, and coffee, could be purchased.

While the tour offered a lot of interesting information, we found the overall pace a bit rushed. There was hardly any time to take photos or to look at the plants in detail. The tasting session also felt quite hurried, possibly because we were on the last tour of the day, but that is just our assumption. In the souvenir shop, there was a strong emphasis on buying, which somewhat affected the otherwise positive overall impression.

Some of the products offered, such as coffee, do not come directly from the plantation but are sold under its name because they contain vanilla. We found the same items later in major supermarkets in Mauritius at up to 50% lower prices. Therefore, we decided not to buy anything on site and instead made a purchase at a specialty vanilla store, where we could browse at our leisure.

Interestingly, the plantation was also featured in the TV show “Achtung Abzocke – Urlaub auf Mauritius” (Kabel 1). The same employee shown in the program was present in the souvenir shop during our visit and also pressed visitors to buy. In addition, the vanilla pods and prices shown on the show did not match the actual offers: the vanilla on site was significantly more expensive (from around 40 € per pack) and not available in smaller quantities.

Admission

Approx. Rs 450 / 8.50 € per person

Seaplane Flight over the Underwater Waterfall

Location & Route

The departure point for the seaplane flight over the underwater waterfall is at La Prairie Beach on the coast of Mauritius, organized by lagoonFLIGHT. From Flic en Flac or Grand Baie, the beach can be reached by car in about 30–50 minutes depending on traffic.

Visit & Experience

The experience can be booked well in advance, preferably via WhatsApp or email to secure availability. The flight costs around €149 per person and lasts approximately 15 minutes.

The flight itself was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The view over the turquoise sea, coral reefs, and the legendary underwater waterfall is simply breathtaking, and the feeling of floating in a seaplane is unforgettable. The staff on site were very friendly, helpful, and explained everything in detail, making you feel well taken care of at all times. A special highlight: in case of last-minute changes, you are informed quickly and easily via WhatsApp.

A minor downside was that our flight schedule was changed several times, and we could not fly together. Instead, only one of us flew with another passenger at a time, which slightly limited the shared experience.

Despite minor organizational issues, the flight was an absolute highlight, and we highly recommend the experience.

Excursion to Port Louis – Waterfront and Central Market

Visit & Experience

Port Louis is the lively capital of Mauritius. The area around the Waterfront feels like a small open-air shopping center. One of the highlights is the street with decorative umbrellas, creating a colorful and charming atmosphere.

Just a few minutes’ walk away is the Central Market Port Louis, a traditional market where you can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, spices, and local specialties. Simply strolling through the market is a feast for the senses: the colors, smells, and sounds give an authentic impression of daily life in Mauritius.

We found the excursion very enjoyable, as everything is easily accessible on foot while also offering the chance to do some shopping, discover souvenirs, and experience the lively atmosphere of the capital.

Parking

We parked our car at the Waterfront, a conveniently located parking area right by the water and close to many attractions.

Tip

Arrive early, especially if you want to explore the market at a relaxed pace. Bring cash for small purchases and keep an eye on your belongings. The street with the umbrellas is perfect for photos.
