Cambodia
In April 2023, my partner and I checked another country off our bucket list: Cambodia. This fascinating destination, with its rich history, breathtaking temples, and idyllic beaches, had long been on our travel radar.
Our journey began in Frankfurt, where we flew with Qatar Airways via Bangkok to Siem Reap for €1,000 per person, including luggage. This marked the start of an incredible 1.5-week adventure through some of Cambodia’s most stunning and exciting places.
We explored the mystical temples of Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, experienced the vibrant energy of Phnom Penh, enjoyed the laid-back charm of Kampot, and relaxed on the pristine beaches of Koh Rong. Each destination had its own unique magic, leaving us with unforgettable memories.
After our time in Cambodia, we continued our travels to Vietnam before finally flying home from Hanoi. But Cambodia left a lasting impression on us with its vibrant culture, warm hospitality, and incredible diversity.
In this blog, I want to take you along on our journey through Cambodia, sharing our highlights, valuable tips, and personal recommendations, so you, too, can experience the beauty of this amazing country.
Currency: Cambodia uses the Cambodian Riel (KHR), but the US Dollar is widely accepted and often the preferred currency for transactions, even among locals.

Siem Reap
Our journey to Cambodia began in Siem Reap, a city with a charm all its own. From the moment we arrived, the airport felt familiar, small, manageable, and welcoming, much like the one on Koh Samui in Thailand.
After stepping off the plane, we headed straight into the terminal. For those who hadn’t arranged a visa in advance, there was the option to purchase one at the counter.
Unfortunately, we had to wait quite a while at passport control. While in line, we struck up a conversation with a friendly traveler from Ireland, who shared an interesting anecdote. He mentioned that, in the past, officers here sometimes requested “tips.” Nowadays, a sign makes it clear that no additional payments are required.

Every year, thousands of travelers visit Angkor Wat to experience its unique atmosphere and breathtaking architecture.
Our Sunrise Tour to Angkor Wat
To witness this iconic landmark in a truly magical setting, we booked a Sunrise Tour through Klook. We were picked up from our hotel at 4:20 AM, still sleepy but filled with excitement. As the first golden rays of the sun illuminated the temple, we were absolutely mesmerized. Seeing Angkor Wat at dawn was an unforgettable experience.
After watching the sunrise, we had plenty of time to explore the temple before heading to a nearby restaurant for breakfast. Our tour continued with visits to:
• Ta Prohm Temple: Famous for its massive tree roots that intertwine with the temple ruins, creating an enchanting, jungle-like atmosphere.
• Bayon Temple: Known for its striking stone towers, each adorned with serene, smiling faces.

The Angkor Wat tour was undoubtedly one of the highlights of our Cambodia trip. The rich history, breathtaking architecture, and mystical atmosphere made this visit truly special.
The only downside was the breakfast stop: the food was underwhelming, overpriced, and the service was slow. If you’re planning a visit, we highly recommend checking Google Maps for better-rated restaurant options nearby.

Beaches on Koh Rong
We only visited the beaches that belonged to our hotels and Long Beach. We were especially impressed by the beach at the “Golden Beach Resort.
Golden Beach Resort/Long Set Beach
The beach at the Golden Beach Resort left us in awe and is definitely one of the most beautiful beaches we have ever visited. The sand was incredibly fine, and the water was crystal clear, clean, and simply perfect for snorkeling. We truly felt like we were in paradise and fully enjoyed the beauty of nature. It was an unforgettable experience that will stay with us for a long time.

The Secret Garden/Pagoda Beach
We found the beach at The Secret Garden Hotel to be well-designed, with plenty of activities like stand-up paddling and kayaking. However, compared to the Golden Beach Resort, we preferred the beach there much more. During our stay, the water at Golden Beach was noticeably clearer and more beautiful. Nevertheless, we still felt very comfortable at The Secret Garden Hotel’s beach and enjoyed the activities.

Long Beach
One of the most famous beaches on Koh Rong, featuring fine white sand and turquoise water. The beach stretches for 7 km, making it a perfect spot for long walks and stunning sunsets. While there are a few resorts, the beach remains relatively quiet.

Activities on Koh Rong
Koh Rong offers a variety of activities that allow you to experience the island’s breathtaking nature and crystal-clear waters up close. Here are some highlights:
Snorkeling
There are many tour operators on Koh Rong that organize snorkeling trips to the best spots on the island, such as Coral Garden, Long Set Beach, and Sok San Beach. The underwater world is impressive, with vibrant coral reefs and a wide variety of fish.
A special highlight is the option to book a private boat tour to explore more secluded snorkeling spots. Tip: Bring your own snorkeling gear or rent it on-site, as availability can be limited.

Koh Rong is a paradise for divers, offering unique experiences for both beginners and advanced divers. The waters surrounding the island are home to a fascinating diversity of marine life, including sharks, rays, barracudas, and octopuses.
Popular dive sites include spots around Koh Rong and the neighboring island of Koh Rong Samloem. For adventure seekers, there’s also the opportunity to explore wrecks, such as the sunken Sunset Boat from 2011, now covered in coral and an impressive dive site.
Kayaking & Stand-Up Paddling
A relaxing yet adventurous way to explore the island is by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Many hotels, including the Golden Beach Resort and The Secret Garden, offer these activities free of charge for their guests.
While paddling across the turquoise waters, you can not only enjoy the stunning scenery but also observe the underwater world with its colorful fish and corals.
And much more…
Whether it’s jungle hikes, watching the sunset on the island’s most beautiful beaches, or simply relaxing by the sea – Koh Rong has something for everyone and makes every visit unforgettable.

Kampot
After our time on Koh Rong, our journey took us to the south of Cambodia, to Kampot, a province known for its scenic beauty, picturesque river, and stunning mountains. For us, Kampot was not only the perfect stopover on our way to Vietnam but also a destination we were eager to experience. We were especially excited to visit the world-famous pepper plantations, which produce some of the finest pepper varieties in the world.
During our short stay, we quickly realized that Kampot had so much more to offer than we initially expected. The charm of the small town, the relaxed atmosphere, and the numerous outdoor activities like trekking, kayaking, and boat tours on the river truly captivated us. It’s a place where you can unwind and immerse yourself in nature.
One of the highlights of our visit was touring a pepper plantation. Kampot pepper is renowned worldwide for its intense flavor and high quality, and it was fascinating to learn more about its cultivation and processing. We had the chance to taste different varieties of pepper and were impressed by the amount of care and effort that goes into each grain.
Travel from Koh Rong to Kampot
Provider: Booked via 12go.asia
Cost: From €24 per person
Duration: Approximately 4–5 hours
Our journey from Koh Rong to Kampot turned out to be quite an adventure. First, we took a ferry from Koh Rong to Sihanoukville. Upon arrival at the ferry port, we had the option to continue by bus (pre-booked via 12go.asia) or take a taxi. Unfortunately, due to a ferry delay, we missed our bus and had to book a last-minute taxi for a total of €50.
Tip: Be sure to plan enough buffer time!
Although the ride to Kampot offered scenic views, the road conditions were far from ideal. With many potholes and unpaved sections, the journey was not particularly comfortable, and the trip took longer than expected as vehicles had to drive slowly.
Accommodation in Kampot
Location:
Not centrally located
Cost:
€56 per night, including breakfast
Value for money:
Acceptable
Positive:
The staff was friendly and tried to make our stay enjoyable.
Negative:
The accommodation was very noisy, as the rooms were located directly by the pool.
During our stay, there were many families with small children who did not respect quiet hours. The pool was used late into the night, and we were woken up by the noise as early as 6:30 AM.
The staff spoke very little English, which led to misunderstandings.
- There were only a few vegetarian options for breakfast.
- We booked a transfer to Ha Tien (Vietnam) through the hotel, but it only went to the border and not to the city. The hotel did not inform us about this limitation. The price was also relatively high, and a taxi via the Pass App would have cost only about a third of the price.

La Plantation not only offers tours but also the chance to purchase their products directly. Prices start at around $20, and they conveniently accept credit cards.

Kampot Night Market
During our short stay in Kampot, we visited the Kampot Night Market. We especially enjoyed the food options, there was a great selection of classic local dishes and snacks.
By chance, there was a boxing match taking place during our visit, which was an exciting way to wrap up our time in Cambodia.
Opening Hours:
Monday – Sunday: 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM

Additional Activities in Kampot
Unfortunately, our short stay in Kampot didn’t allow us to explore all the highlights of the region. However, we heard great things from other hotel guests about these excursions, which we’d like to share with you:
Bokor Hill National Park
Bokor Hill National Park is one of the most popular destinations in Kampot Province. The hiking trails through picturesque landscapes and the spectacular waterfalls are said to be particularly impressive. From the top of the park, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the surroundings and the sea.
What sounded especially fascinating to us was exploring the abandoned buildings and casinos of the former Hill Station, a piece of history that showcases the connection between nature and architecture in the region. A must-visit for nature lovers and history enthusiasts!
BoTree Farm
BoTree Farm was recommended to us as a great place for those interested in sustainable agriculture and regional products. The farm produces high-quality organic products, including pepper, rice, fruits, and herbs.
Visitors can join guided tours to learn more about organic farming and production processes. One particularly exciting option: cooking classes, where you can prepare local specialties with fresh ingredients. BoTree Farm is a fantastic example of sustainable agriculture in Cambodia.
Opening hours:
Monday – Sunday, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
Salt Fields
The salt fields in Kampot are not only economically significant but also a fascinating attraction. Here, you can watch workers harvesting and processing salt. Many visitors raved about the opportunity to learn more about the production process and even purchase local salt products on-site.
Additionally, the salt fields provide a great insight into local cuisine, as many specialties are made using this natural ingredient.
SIM Card in Cambodia
Upon our arrival in Siem Reap, we headed directly to the SIM card kiosks in the airport’s arrival hall. There are counters for Metfone, Smart, and Cellcard, making the purchase straightforward.
Prices (as of 2025):
Smart Axiata: Approximately $5 for 30 GB, valid for 15 days.
Cellcard: Around $6 for 60 GB, or up to $10 for 100 GB.
Metfone: About $6 for 60 GB, with particularly good coverage in rural areas.
Which Provider to Choose?
Based on coverage and reliability, Smart Axiata is often recommended for most travelers, especially in urban and tourist areas. However, if you’re planning to visit remote regions, Metfone might be a better option due to its extensive rural coverage. Cellcard offers competitive pricing and is a solid choice for budget-conscious travelers.

Our onward journey to Vietnam
The next day, the time had come: we used Kampot as our starting point to take a taxi to the Vietnamese border. After completing the exit formalities in Cambodia, we crossed the border on foot and handled the entry procedures for Vietnam. From there, we continued our journey with a taxi that took us directly to our next destination.
Although our stay in Cambodia was short, we experienced so much and gathered countless impressions during that time. The mix of history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes left a deep impression on us, Cambodia will definitely stay in our memory!
