Vaccination Recommendations for Costa Rica – RKI (as of April 2025)

1. Check & Update Standard Vaccinations

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Polio

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella

  • Influenza & COVID-19

These should always be up to date before any international trip.

2. Travel Vaccinations for Costa Rica

  • Hepatitis A: recommended for all travelers.

  • Hepatitis B: for longer stays or close contact with the local population.

  • Typhoid: for travelers at special risk (simple hygiene conditions, rural areas).

  • Rabies: for longer stays or close contact with animals.

  • Dengue vaccine: possible for long-term stays or special exposure.

3. Yellow Fever

  • No vaccination required if traveling directly from Europe.

  • Vaccination mandatory if arriving from a yellow fever endemic area (exceptions: Argentina and Panama) or from Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago, Tanzania, and Zambia.

  • No proof required for airport transit through these countries.

Entry to Costa Rica – Status 2025 (according to the German Foreign Office)

1. Visa & Entry Permit

  • No visa required for German citizens for tourist stays of up to 180 days.

  • Length of stay is determined by border officials on entry and may be shorter.

  • Return/ongoing ticket and proof of sufficient financial means required.

  • Extensions can be applied for (with a fee) at the Immigration Office (Migración).

2. Travel Documents

  • Allowed: Passport, Temporary Passport, Child’s Passport.

  • Not valid: National ID card, Temporary ID card.

  • Validity: Travel documents must be valid for at least the day of entry and the following day.

  • Recommendation: validity of at least 6 months beyond the end of travel.

3. Border Control

  • Overland entry (Panama or Nicaragua): Both exit stamps from the neighboring country and entry stamps from Costa Rica must be in your passport.

  • At the Sixaola border crossing (Panama – Costa Rica), travelers must cross a bridge on foot and visit both border posts.

  • Missing stamps can lead to issues with onward travel, passport confiscation, suspicion of illegal stay, or deportation.

4. Entry & Exit via the USA

  • For transit via the USA, U.S. entry requirements apply (including ESTA).

  • Powdery substances (e.g., coffee) may not be carried in hand luggage unless purchased duty-free.

5. Exit Fees

  • Air travel: Departure tax usually included in ticket price.

  • Land border exit: approx. 7 USD (payable in CRC as well).

  • Illegal stay: Penalty of 100 USD per month. Non-payment may result in an entry ban three times the length of the overstay.

A valid travel and international health insurance is strongly recommended.

SIM Card in Costa Rica

We bought a SIM card directly after arriving at San José Airport (SJO). The stands of the major providers are easy to find in the arrivals area, allowing us to go online right away, use WhatsApp, and plan our route.

Kolbi (ICE – Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad)

  • Largest provider in the country, state-owned

  • Good coverage, even in many rural areas

  • Example: 2 GB data package for approx. 4,000 CRC (~7 €)

Claro

  • International brand with good price-performance ratio

  • Reliable coverage in cities and tourist areas

  • Example: 3 GB data package for approx. 5,000 CRC (~9 €)

Movistar

  • Popular among locals, often cheaper prepaid options

  • Good coverage in urban areas, weaker in remote regions

  • Example: 2.5 GB for approx. 4,500 CRC (~8 €)

Tips

  • SIM cards available at the airport, supermarkets, gas stations, and official shops.

  • Passport usually required for purchase.

  • Small prepaid packages are ideal for short stays; weekly or monthly packages are cheaper for longer trips.

  • Kolbi has the best coverage in remote national parks, Claro & Movistar are usually cheaper in cities.

Driver’s License in Costa Rica

  • Validity: German driver’s license + passport valid up to 6 months (depending on entry stamp).
  • International License: Not mandatory but recommended to avoid issues with police checks.

Drones in Costa Rica – Rules, Tips & Key Information

Costa Rica’s Caribbean coastline, lush rainforests, and majestic volcanoes make it a dream for drone pilots. To avoid trouble, you must follow the local regulations.

Maximum Altitude & Visual Line of Sight (VLOS)

  • Max altitude: 120 meters in uncontrolled airspace.

  • VLOS: Drone must always remain in sight.

  • Night flights: Only allowed with DGAC (aviation authority) approval under special conditions.

Registration & Permits

  • Recreational use: No registration required.

  • Commercial use: Registration with the Dirección General de Aviación Civil (DGAC) required.

  • Drone marking: Not required.

  • Maximum weight: Recreational drones must not exceed 25 kg.

Insurance

  • Not legally required.

Our First Trip to Costa Rica (November 2021)

In November 2021, a long-held dream of mine came true: Costa Rica. For two weeks, my friend and I explored this natural paradise, experiencing an unforgettable mix of breathtaking landscapes, exotic wildlife, and relaxed beach life.

Our journey began in San José before we discovered the dreamy beaches of Santa Teresa, the stunning nature of Manuel Antonio, and the Caribbean vibes of Puerto Viejo. Each region fascinated us in its own way – from wild rainforests and smoking volcanoes to turquoise waters and endless sandy beaches.

Costa Rica exceeded all our expectations. Whether watching monkeys in the national parks, surfing on the Pacific coast, or soaking in the tropical atmosphere,  this country is a true paradise for adventurers and nature lovers.

San Jose

San José, the vibrant capital of Costa Rica, is the perfect starting point for a journey through the country. Centrally located, the city offers great connections to Costa Rica’s stunning national parks, beaches, and volcanoes. But San José itself has plenty to offer as well: from colonial architecture and bustling markets to fascinating museums, it’s a place where you can truly experience the country’s history and culture.

We spent our first night in San José as the starting point of our adventure, getting a small glimpse of city life. Highlights include the National Theater, the Mercado Central with its authentic local specialties, and the stunning Gold Museum.

Getting to San José

Provider: Air Europa
Cost: Varies depending on the season and booking time
Duration: Approx. 18 hours (including layovers in Madrid & Panama City)

Our journey to Costa Rica started with a flight from Frankfurt to Madrid with Air Europa. After a short layover, we continued to Panama City, where we caught our final connecting flight to San José. After around 18 hours of travel, we finally reached our destination.

Upon arrival at Juan Santamaría Airport, there are several options to get to the city center. The most affordable option is the Black & White Tuasa buses, which run regularly between the airport and downtown. Alternatively, you can easily take an Uber or a taxi for a direct transfer to your accommodation.

Mercado Central

Location
The largest market in San José—perfect for experiencing the city’s vibrant atmosphere.

Our Impression
An authentic market with a wide variety of local foods, fresh ingredients, and regional products. A great place to try specialties like baked plantains, avocado, beans, and rice. In addition to food, you’ll find numerous stalls selling spices, fruits, vegetables, textiles, and souvenirs.

Conclusion
A must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the real Costa Rica. Not only can you enjoy delicious and affordable food, but you can also immerse yourself in the lively market scene.

Location

This museum houses the world’s largest collection of pre-Columbian jade artifacts. In addition to the exquisite jewelry, there are interactive exhibits that explore Costa Rica’s indigenous history and culture.

Santa Teresa/Mal País

Santa Teresa, a charming coastal village on the Nicoya Peninsula, is the perfect place to experience Costa Rica’s laid-back lifestyle. Known for its stunning beaches, world-class surf spots, and breathtaking sunsets, it attracts travelers from all over the world. Here, a relaxed beach vibe meets untouched nature and a vibrant international community.

We spent several days in Santa Teresa and found the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation. Whether surfing the Pacific waves, exploring lush rainforests, or enjoying fresh seafood at one of the many beachfront restaurants,  this place captivated us from the start.

Getting to Santa Teresa from San José

Cost: $15–25
Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours

Our journey to Santa Teresa began with a bus ride from San José towards the coast. The bus was originally supposed to take us directly to Santa Teresa, but we had to get off in a nearby town. One of the highlights of the trip was crossing the Gulf of Nicoya on the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera,  a beautiful route with stunning ocean views.

Upon arriving in a town near Santa Teresa, we shared a ride with two other travelers to our accommodations. Since there were no official taxis in the area, locals offered rides for a small fee,  a common practice here. Otherwise, we would have had to wait two hours for the next bus.

Tip: It’s best to check the latest departure times at the San José bus terminala day in advance and buy your ticket early to secure a seat.

Accommodation – Casa Zen Guesthouse and Yoga Center

Location
The guesthouse is just a few minutes’ walk from the beach and offers a peaceful, relaxing atmosphere, ideal for travelers looking to combine yoga, surfing, and relaxation.

Positive

  • Beautiful, relaxed atmosphere

  • Only shared bathrooms, which was not ideal

Conclusion
Casa Zen Guesthouse & Yoga Center is a solid choice for those who value a tranquil environment and yoga offerings. However, if you prefer more comfort, a place with a private bathroom might be a better option.

During our time in Santa Teresa, we explored various beaches,  from lively surf spots to quiet, hidden coves. Each beach had its own unique charm, but some stood out to us the most.

Playa Santa Teresa

Location:
Playa Santa Teresa is located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica on the Nicoya Peninsula and is known for its long sandy beaches, world-class surf conditions, and breathtaking sunsets.

Our Impression:
The expansive beach impresses with fine, light-colored sand, tropical vegetation, and a relaxed atmosphere. Surfers, in particular, will love it here, as the consistent waves provide perfect conditions for both beginners and pros. Those looking to simply relax will also find plenty of space to enjoy the natural beauty.

A special highlight is the small beach vendors selling fresh coconuts and delicious raw cakes,  perfect for a refreshing snack. Unfortunately, during our stay, we noticed some driftwood and plastic waste washed ashore, but it didn’t take away much from the stunning setting.

Conclusion:
Playa Santa Teresa is the perfect destination for those who love surfing, nature, and laid-back vibes. Whether you’re riding the waves or relaxing in a hammock, this beach embodies the true Costa Rica feeling.

Playa Hermosa

Location:
Just a few kilometers north of Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa is a spacious and less crowded beach, known for its relaxed atmosphere and ideal surf conditions.

Our Impression:
Playa Hermosa truly lives up to its name “beautiful beach.” The fine, light-colored sand and gentle waves create the perfect setting for a relaxing day by the sea. The beach is ideal for beginner surfers, as the waves here are slightly calmer than in Santa Teresa. There are also shady spots under the palm trees, perfect for a break in between.

We were especially impressed by the peaceful atmosphere – far fewer people visit this beach compared to the main stretch in Santa Teresa. Nearby, you’ll find a few small cafés and restaurants serving fresh smoothies and local specialties.

Conclusion:
Playa Hermosa is the perfect place for those looking to try surfing or simply enjoy the tropical surroundings in peace. The laid-back vibe and stunning scenery make this beach a true hidden gem.

Playa Manzanillo

Location:
Playa Manzanillo is located slightly off the beaten path, south of Playa Hermosa, and can be reached by a 4×4 vehicle or a short hike.

Our Impression:
This hidden beach is a true paradise for those looking to escape the crowds. The sand is soft, the water is clear and calm,  perfect for swimming or snorkeling. The surrounding trees also provide natural shade, making it a great spot to relax.

Since Playa Manzanillo is not as easily accessible as other beaches, you’ll often find only a few visitors here. There are no restaurants or shops nearby, so it’s best to bring water and snacks.

Conclusion:
A true hidden gem for anyone who loves peace and untouched nature. Playa Manzanillo offers a stunning, pristine setting and is the perfect spot for a quiet getaway away from the hustle and bustle.

Food in Santa Teresa

Earth Cafe

Location:
Centrally located in Santa Teresa, making it the perfect spot for a healthy refreshment after the beach or a yoga session.

Our Impression:
A beautifully designed café with a relaxed atmosphere and a wide selection of fresh, healthy dishes. We especially loved the smoothie bowls and freshly pressed juices. The cozy decor and friendly staff made the visit even more enjoyable.

Conclusion:
Perfect for those who appreciate fresh, healthy ingredients and want to enjoy them in a laid-back setting. A wonderful place for a little break in Santa Teresa.

Organic Market

Our Impression:
A small but diverse market offering regional and handmade products. From fresh fruits and vegetables to delicious raw cakes and handmade jewelry, you’ll find plenty of sustainable and healthy treats. The relaxed atmosphere right by the beach makes visiting the market a special experience.

Conclusion:
A great place to discover local products, stock up on healthy snacks, and soak in the unique vibe of Santa Teresa.

The Olam Pure Food Yoga Studio is located in the heart of Santa Teresa and is a popular spot for yoga enthusiasts.

1.5-hour yoga session for around $12

Our impression:
The combination of relaxing yoga sessions and the studio’s peaceful atmosphere offers the perfect way to unwind and recharge. A special highlight: after the session, you can treat yourself to healthy snacks and fresh juices at the attached café.

Cabo Blanco Nationalpark

Location:
The Cabo Blanco National Park is located at the southern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, about 10 km from Santa Teresa.

Accessibility:
Without your own car or a taxi, the park is hard to reach. It is recommended to book a guided tour or rent a car.

Our impression:
The park impresses with dense rainforests, fascinating wildlife, and hidden trails that lead to secluded beaches. Perfect for those who want to take a break from the beach life and explore nature.

Conclusion:
A great destination for nature lovers,  with a bit of luck, you can spot monkeys, raccoons, and exotic birds here.

Tagesausflug nach Montezuma

Location:
The small coastal village of Montezuma is about 1.5 hours from Santa Teresa and is known for its alternative vibe.

Our impression:
Montezuma has established itself as a relaxed hippie village with a vibrant art scene and great beaches. A must-see are the Montezuma Waterfalls, which are accessible after a short hike.

Conclusion:
A great opportunity to leave Santa Teresa for a day and experience the artistic and alternative atmosphere of Montezuma.

Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio, a small town on Costa Rica’s central Pacific coast, is one of the country’s most popular travel destinations. Getting to Manuel Antonio

Cost: Approx. $20–30
Duration: Approx. 6–8 hours

Our journey to Manuel Antonio began early in the morning with a bus to the ferry in Paquera. After the crossing to Puntarenas, we took a taxi to the bus station, where our next bus to Quepos was departing.

Upon arrival in Quepos, we boarded one of the regularly scheduled buses to Manuel Antonio, which run about every 30 minutes. After a short ride of around 10 minutes, we finally reached our accommodation in Manuel Antonio.

The journey was a bit time-consuming, but the stunning landscapes along the way made the trip an experience in itself in Costa Rica.

The hotel is situated in the heart of a 20-hectare untouched forest, offering a unique atmosphere surrounded by nature. To reach the beach, supermarket, and other amenities, a bus is required, which departs from the nearby main road.

Value for money: Good

  • Slightly remote location, making the bus necessary for transportation

Conclusion
Teva Jungle Hotel stands out with its unique location in the heart of nature and offers a special experience with wildlife like toucans and monkeys. If you’re looking for peace and nature, this is the perfect place. However, for more flexibility in exploring the area, it’s important to factor in the additional travel time.

The Best Beaches in Manuel Antonio

Playa Espadilla Norte

Location:
Playa Espadilla Norte is located on the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, just a short distance from Manuel Antonio National Park. The long sandy beach is a popular destination for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts.

Our Impression:
The expansive beach offers a stunning setting with fine sand, gentle waves, and a tropical environment. It’s especially great for swimmers and sunbathers, but surfing and stand-up paddleboarding are also available.

Along the beach, there are various food stalls and a food truck offering delicious Mexican specialties – perfect for a quick snack. After our visit to the national park, we relaxed here to end the day, which was a wonderful conclusion to an adventurous day.

Conclusion:
Playa Espadilla Norte is the perfect place to enjoy nature, refresh in the sea, or try out water sports. Its proximity to the national park makes it an ideal stop after exploring the fascinating wildlife and plant life of Manuel Antonio.

The fine white sand and calm turquoise water make this beach perfect for swimming and relaxing. Since it is located within the national park, the surroundings are untouched, and there’s a good chance to spot exotic animals like monkeys, sloths, or iguanas in the trees.

The beach can only be reached by hiking through the national park, which adds an adventurous touch to the visit. There are no restaurants or food stalls directly on the beach, so it’s a good idea to bring plenty of water and snacks.

Getting to Puerto Viejo

Cost: Around $15–$20
Duration: Approximately 8–10 hours

Our journey to Puerto Viejo started early in the morning with a bus to Quepos. From there, we took a coach to San José, where we arrived at the central bus terminal. Since our next bus departed from a different terminal (“San José MEPE”), we took a taxi for the short transfer.

From San José, a direct bus took us to Puerto Viejo in about 4–5 hours. The ride passed through dense rainforests and along picturesque coastal stretches,  a first taste of the tropical beauty of the Caribbean coast.

Important:
San José has several bus terminals depending on the destination and bus company. Be sure to check in advance to find the right connection.

Puerto Viejo itself offers a unique atmosphere influenced by Caribbean culture and a laid-back reggae vibe,  the perfect way to start your adventure on Costa Rica’s east coast.

Playa Punta Uva

Location
Playa Punta Uva is located on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, not far from Puerto Viejo. The beach is known for its white sand, turquoise waters, and lush tropical vegetation,  a true paradise for nature lovers.

Our Impression
The peaceful, idyllic beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or kayaking. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, walking along the coast or enjoying the view from one of the swings attached to the palms is a great option,  a popular photo spot and a wonderful way to simply unwind.

Playa Punta Uva can be reached in several ways:

We chose a Tuk-Tuk after visiting the Jaguar Rescue Center,  a convenient and fun way to get there.

Conclusion
A dreamlike beach, ideal for relaxing hours away from the crowds. If you want to experience the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica at its finest, Punta Uva is a must-visit.

Playa Chiquita

Location
Playa Chiquita is located a few kilometers south of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast. The beach is surrounded by dense tropical rainforest, offering a peaceful, natural environment.

Features
The fine golden sand and clear waters make Playa Chiquita an ideal spot for swimming and relaxing. Natural rock formations create small, sheltered coves. It’s also common to spot monkeys and exotic birds in the surrounding area.
