Entry to Costa Rica – Status 2025 (according to the German Foreign Office)
1. Visa & Entry Permit
No visa required for German citizens for tourist stays of up to 180 days.
Length of stay is determined by border officials on entry and may be shorter.
Return/ongoing ticket and proof of sufficient financial means required.
Extensions can be applied for (with a fee) at the Immigration Office (Migración).
2. Travel Documents
Allowed: Passport, Temporary Passport, Child’s Passport.
Not valid: National ID card, Temporary ID card.
Validity: Travel documents must be valid for at least the day of entry and the following day.
Recommendation: validity of at least 6 months beyond the end of travel.
3. Border Control
Overland entry (Panama or Nicaragua): Both exit stamps from the neighboring country and entry stamps from Costa Rica must be in your passport.
At the Sixaola border crossing (Panama – Costa Rica), travelers must cross a bridge on foot and visit both border posts.
Missing stamps can lead to issues with onward travel, passport confiscation, suspicion of illegal stay, or deportation.
4. Entry & Exit via the USA
For transit via the USA, U.S. entry requirements apply (including ESTA).
Powdery substances (e.g., coffee) may not be carried in hand luggage unless purchased duty-free.
5. Exit Fees
Air travel: Departure tax usually included in ticket price.
Land border exit: approx. 7 USD (payable in CRC as well).
Illegal stay: Penalty of 100 USD per month. Non-payment may result in an entry ban three times the length of the overstay.

We bought a SIM card directly after arriving at San José Airport (SJO). The stands of the major providers are easy to find in the arrivals area, allowing us to go online right away, use WhatsApp, and plan our route.

In November 2021, a long-held dream of mine came true: Costa Rica. For two weeks, my friend and I explored this natural paradise, experiencing an unforgettable mix of breathtaking landscapes, exotic wildlife, and relaxed beach life.
Our journey began in San José before we discovered the dreamy beaches of Santa Teresa, the stunning nature of Manuel Antonio, and the Caribbean vibes of Puerto Viejo. Each region fascinated us in its own way – from wild rainforests and smoking volcanoes to turquoise waters and endless sandy beaches.
Costa Rica exceeded all our expectations. Whether watching monkeys in the national parks, surfing on the Pacific coast, or soaking in the tropical atmosphere, this country is a true paradise for adventurers and nature lovers.

San Jose
San José, the vibrant capital of Costa Rica, is the perfect starting point for a journey through the country. Getting to San José
Provider: Air Europa
Cost: Varies depending on the season and booking time
Duration: Approx. 18 hours (including layovers in Madrid & Panama City)
Our journey to Costa Rica started with a flight from Frankfurt to Madrid with Air Europa. After a short layover, we continued to Panama City, where we caught our final connecting flight to San José. After around 18 hours of travel, we finally reached our destination.
Upon arrival at Juan Santamaría Airport, there are several options to get to the city center. The most affordable option is the Black & White Tuasa buses, which run regularly between the airport and downtown. Alternatively, you can easily take an Uber or a taxi for a direct transfer to your accommodation.

Getting to Santa Teresa from San José
Cost: $15–25
Duration: Approximately 5–6 hours
Our journey to Santa Teresa began with a bus ride from San José towards the coast. The bus was originally supposed to take us directly to Santa Teresa, but we had to get off in a nearby town. One of the highlights of the trip was crossing the Gulf of Nicoya on the ferry from Puntarenas to Paquera, a beautiful route with stunning ocean views.
Upon arriving in a town near Santa Teresa, we shared a ride with two other travelers to our accommodations. Since there were no official taxis in the area, locals offered rides for a small fee, a common practice here. Otherwise, we would have had to wait two hours for the next bus.
Tip: It’s best to check the latest departure times at the San José bus terminala day in advance and buy your ticket early to secure a seat.

Our Impression:
The expansive beach impresses with fine, light-colored sand, tropical vegetation, and a relaxed atmosphere. Surfers, in particular, will love it here, as the consistent waves provide perfect conditions for both beginners and pros. Those looking to simply relax will also find plenty of space to enjoy the natural beauty.
A special highlight is the small beach vendors selling fresh coconuts and delicious raw cakes, perfect for a refreshing snack. Unfortunately, during our stay, we noticed some driftwood and plastic waste washed ashore, but it didn’t take away much from the stunning setting.

Playa Santa Teresa is the perfect destination for those who love surfing, nature, and laid-back vibes. Whether you’re riding the waves or relaxing in a hammock, this beach embodies the true Costa Rica feeling.
Playa Hermosa
Location:
Just a few kilometers north of Santa Teresa, Playa Hermosa is a spacious and less crowded beach, known for its relaxed atmosphere and ideal surf conditions.
Our Impression:
Playa Hermosa truly lives up to its name “beautiful beach.” The fine, light-colored sand and gentle waves create the perfect setting for a relaxing day by the sea. The beach is ideal for beginner surfers, as the waves here are slightly calmer than in Santa Teresa. There are also shady spots under the palm trees, perfect for a break in between.
We were especially impressed by the peaceful atmosphere – far fewer people visit this beach compared to the main stretch in Santa Teresa. Nearby, you’ll find a few small cafés and restaurants serving fresh smoothies and local specialties.
Conclusion:
Playa Hermosa is the perfect place for those looking to try surfing or simply enjoy the tropical surroundings in peace. The laid-back vibe and stunning scenery make this beach a true hidden gem.
Playa Manzanillo
Location:
Playa Manzanillo is located slightly off the beaten path, south of Playa Hermosa, and can be reached by a 4×4 vehicle or a short hike.
Our Impression:
This hidden beach is a true paradise for those looking to escape the crowds. The sand is soft, the water is clear and calm, perfect for swimming or snorkeling. The surrounding trees also provide natural shade, making it a great spot to relax.
Since Playa Manzanillo is not as easily accessible as other beaches, you’ll often find only a few visitors here. There are no restaurants or shops nearby, so it’s best to bring water and snacks.

A true hidden gem for anyone who loves peace and untouched nature. Playa Manzanillo offers a stunning, pristine setting and is the perfect spot for a quiet getaway away from the hustle and bustle.

The small coastal village of Montezuma is about 1.5 hours from Santa Teresa and is known for its alternative vibe.
Our impression:
Montezuma has established itself as a relaxed hippie village with a vibrant art scene and great beaches. A must-see are the Montezuma Waterfalls, which are accessible after a short hike.
Conclusion:
A great opportunity to leave Santa Teresa for a day and experience the artistic and alternative atmosphere of Montezuma.

Getting to Manuel Antonio
Cost: Approx. $20–30
Duration: Approx. 6–8 hours
Our journey to Manuel Antonio began early in the morning with a bus to the ferry in Paquera. After the crossing to Puntarenas, we took a taxi to the bus station, where our next bus to Quepos was departing.
Upon arrival in Quepos, we boarded one of the regularly scheduled buses to Manuel Antonio, which run about every 30 minutes. After a short ride of around 10 minutes, we finally reached our accommodation in Manuel Antonio.
The journey was a bit time-consuming, but the stunning landscapes along the way made the trip an experience in itself in Costa Rica.

Our Impression:
The expansive beach offers a stunning setting with fine sand, gentle waves, and a tropical environment. It’s especially great for swimmers and sunbathers, but surfing and stand-up paddleboarding are also available.
Along the beach, there are various food stalls and a food truck offering delicious Mexican specialties – perfect for a quick snack. After our visit to the national park, we relaxed here to end the day, which was a wonderful conclusion to an adventurous day.

Playa Espadilla Norte is the perfect place to enjoy nature, refresh in the sea, or try out water sports. Its proximity to the national park makes it an ideal stop after exploring the fascinating wildlife and plant life of Manuel Antonio.

Playa Manuel Antonio is located in the heart of Manuel Antonio National Park and is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Surrounded by dense rainforest and crystal-clear waters, this beach offers a breathtaking setting for nature lovers.
Our Impression:
The fine white sand and calm turquoise water make this beach perfect for swimming and relaxing. Since it is located within the national park, the surroundings are untouched, and there’s a good chance to spot exotic animals like monkeys, sloths, or iguanas in the trees.
The beach can only be reached by hiking through the national park, which adds an adventurous touch to the visit. There are no restaurants or food stalls directly on the beach, so it’s a good idea to bring plenty of water and snacks.

Getting to Puerto Viejo
Cost: Around $15–$20
Duration: Approximately 8–10 hours
Our journey to Puerto Viejo started early in the morning with a bus to Quepos. From there, we took a coach to San José, where we arrived at the central bus terminal. Since our next bus departed from a different terminal (“San José MEPE”), we took a taxi for the short transfer.
From San José, a direct bus took us to Puerto Viejo in about 4–5 hours. The ride passed through dense rainforests and along picturesque coastal stretches, a first taste of the tropical beauty of the Caribbean coast.
Important:
San José has several bus terminals depending on the destination and bus company. Be sure to check in advance to find the right connection.
Puerto Viejo itself offers a unique atmosphere influenced by Caribbean culture and a laid-back reggae vibe, the perfect way to start your adventure on Costa Rica’s east coast.

Playa Punta Uva is located on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, not far from Puerto Viejo. The beach is known for its white sand, turquoise waters, and lush tropical vegetation, a true paradise for nature lovers.
Our Impression
The peaceful, idyllic beach is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or kayaking. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, walking along the coast or enjoying the view from one of the swings attached to the palms is a great option, a popular photo spot and a wonderful way to simply unwind.

We chose a Tuk-Tuk after visiting the Jaguar Rescue Center, a convenient and fun way to get there.
