Italy, Two Weeks Following the Trails of Art, Culture, and Breathtaking Nature
In August 2023, we fulfilled another travel dream: a two-week road trip through Italy. Together with my partner, we drove from Frankfurt and explored some of the country’s most beautiful places.
Our first stop was Florence, a city full of history and charm. From there, we drove through Tuscany, passing vineyards and small villages, until we reached the hot springs, perfect for relaxing. In Rome, we explored the main sights and enjoyed Italian cuisine before continuing to Alberobello, known for its unique Trulli houses.
Another highlight was Tropea, a town with steep cliffs and stunning beaches. Along the Amalfi Coast, we visited the breathtaking coastal villages before spending our last night in San Gimignano, a medieval town famous for its delicious gelato.
Italy impressed us with its diversity, beautiful landscapes, and amazing food, a trip to remember.

Our Italian journey began with a long but scenic drive from Frankfurt to Florence. The route took us past picturesque Alpine landscapes and through the vast plains of northern Italy before we reached our first destination after about 10–12 hours. Regular breaks made the journey enjoyable and gave us the chance to take in the beautiful surroundings.
Once in Florence, we spent a few days exploring this fascinating city of art and culture – from the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore to the historic Ponte Vecchio and the world-famous Uffizi Gallery. After soaking in the city’s incredible atmosphere, our journey continued.
Our road trip took us through Tuscany’s rolling hills, to the relaxing hot springs, then on to Rome, the fairytale trulli houses of Alberobello, the stunning beaches of Tropea, and along the spectacular Amalfi Coast. Our final night was spent in the charming town of San Gimignano before we headed home, filled with countless unforgettable memories.

To avoid the traffic chaos in the city center, we chose a parking garage slightly outside of Rome. The online booking process was seamless, and upon arrival, we found a secure parking spot at a fair price.
From there, our accommodation in Rome was easily accessible: A short walk to the nearest subway station, a 15-minute ride to the city center, and a little more walking took us directly to our destination.

Since Agerola is located slightly above the coast, our accommodation there was a great choice – quieter, more affordable, yet still with good access to the coastal towns.

For our trip to Positano, we first took the bus to the port of Amalfi. The nearest bus stop was just 3–5 minutes’ walk from our accommodation. The route was winding, but offered beautiful views of the coastline. After about 45 minutes, we arrived at the port of Amalfi, where we used our pre-booked ferry tickets to cross over to Positano.
Return trip: As tickets for the return journey to Amalfi were no longer available online, we bought them directly at the ferry port in Positano.
Important note: Bus tickets cannot be purchased directly on the bus. They are available at kiosks in coastal towns, in select cafes, or through an app. Unfortunately, the app purchase didn’t work for us, so we had to visit a café at the last minute to get the tickets.
The combination of bus and ferry turned out to be a convenient way to explore the Amalfi Coast in a relaxed manner and enjoy the spectacular views from the water.

For our trip to San Gimignano, we started in Amalfi and drove to Tuscany. The route took us along the Amalfi Coast, past Naples, and through the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany. After about five hours, we arrived in the medieval town, known for its impressive towers and historic charm.
Alternative travel options:
Train and Bus: A combination of train and bus is possible, but it involves several transfers, including in Florence or Siena. This option takes considerably longer than driving, but it offers the chance to explore other cities along the way.
Flight: The nearest airport is Florence. From there, you can travel to San Gimignano by rental car or public transport.
Important note: San Gimignano is car-free, so visitors must park their vehicles in the designated parking areas outside the city walls. From there, it’s a short walk into the historic center.
For us, traveling by car was the most convenient option, allowing us to enjoy the beautiful Tuscan landscape and explore San Gimignano at a relaxed pace.

The market stalls open early in the morning, usually between 7:00 and 8:00 AM, and close around noon. Early risers can enjoy the best selection and the relaxed atmosphere without too much hustle and bustle.

Olive Oil Farm - Mascagni Organic Farm
Location:
The farm is nestled in the idyllic Tuscan countryside and was the perfect stop on our way to San Gimignano. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from San Gimignano.
Our Impression:
We were warmly greeted by the team, making the visit special from the start. We were spontaneously offered a small olive oil tasting, where we not only got to try different varieties but also learned a lot about the cultivation, processing, and quality of olive oil. The passion and expertise of the team were evident, making the experience very authentic.
The drive to the farm is along a longer gravel road, which resembles more of a country path, but the journey is worth it!
Conclusion:
A wonderful place for those interested in high-quality, organic olive oil production. The personal atmosphere and educational tasting make the Mascagni Organic Farm a true hidden gem in the region

Parma
Parma, a city in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, is beautifully situated along the banks of the Parma River. The city is renowned for its rich history, art, and culinary delights. Parma is famous for its Parmesan cheese and Parma ham, and it boasts breathtaking architectural treasures such as the Parma Cathedral and the Teatro Farnese. Surrounded by green hills and gentle landscapes, Parma is a place where history, culture, and gastronomy blend harmoniously together.
On the way back, we made a small stop in Parma to visit a cheese factory and, of course, buy some fresh Parmesan. Unfortunately, we arrived a bit too late, so the factory tour was no longer possible. Nevertheless, we didn’t miss out on the experience and bought delicious Parmesan directly from the factory.

During our return journey, we made a stop in Parma to visit a local cheese factory and restock our supply of delicious Parmesan for Germany. We had researched cheese factories in advance and eventually chose this one. In addition to Parmesan, the shop offered a selection of other regional products such as pesto and olive oil. Note: If you plan to stop at a cheese factory in this area, be sure to check the opening hours and lunch breaks, as most cheese factories are only open for limited hours each day and remain closed at lunchtime. This will allow you to plan your visit optimally and experience the authentic flavors of the region.

Flying Drones in Italy – Rules, Tips & What You Need to Know
Italy offers many stunning landscapes and historic cities that are perfect for drone footage. However, before taking off, you should be aware of the most important rules: there are restrictions on flight altitude, minimum distances to people and buildings, as well as designated no-fly zones, such as historic city centers, national parks, or areas near airports. You should also check whether registration or special permits are required. This way, you can fly safely, capture impressive footage, and avoid trouble.
Maximum Flight Altitude and Visual Line of Sight (VLOS)
Maximum altitude: In Italy, drones may only be flown up to a maximum of 120 meters above ground level.
Visual line of sight (VLOS): Drones must always remain within the pilot’s line of sight. Beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) flights are only permitted with special authorization.
Registration & Marking
- Registration: Mandatory for all drones weighing 250 g or more, or equipped with a camera/microphone. Exempt are drones under 250 g without sensors as well as toy drones. Registration is done via d-flight.it and is valid throughout the EU.
- Marking: Every drone must be visibly marked with the registration number (e-ID). If available, the number must also be uploaded into the remote identification system.
Insurance & Pilot License
- Liability insurance: Mandatory for all drones, whether for private or commercial use. Make sure your insurance is also valid in Italy.
- Drone pilot license: Depending on the weight and category, an EU drone license is required. This license is recognized in all EU countries.
Minimum Age
- The minimum age for drone pilots is 16 years.
