Madeira
Madeira, the pearl of the Atlantic, captivates with its breathtaking natural diversity, from steep rocky coasts and lush laurel forests to colorful gardens and terraced hillsides. Due to its mild climate year round, Madeira is also called the Island of Eternal Spring, a paradise for hiking enthusiasts and anyone seeking relaxation in a unique setting.
The capital, Funchal, is the cultural heart of the island. Here, historic architecture, vibrant markets and a modern lifestyle come together. Smaller towns like Santana with its traditional houses or the artist village Ponta do Sol offer authentic insights into island life.
Madeira’s rich history is reflected in historic buildings, botanical gardens and the ingenious levadas system a network of irrigation channels that now opens countless hiking trails through spectacular landscapes.
Thanks to direct flights from many European cities, Madeira is easily accessible making it ideal for anyone looking for nature, culture and relaxation.

ToggleOur Trip to Madeira
In July 2025, my friend and I set off for Madeira, an island that immediately captivated us with its breathtaking nature, pleasant climate, and relaxed atmosphere. Our flight took us directly from Frankfurt to Funchal, where our island adventure began.
For our ten days on Madeira, we chose two bases: first, we spent a few days in Funchal, the vibrant capital, where we strolled through the old town, tasted fresh fruit at the Mercado dos Lavradores, and enjoyed sunsets at the harbor in the evenings. Afterwards, we headed to the quiet north of the island near São Vicente, a perfect starting point for hikes along the levadas and excursions into the lush green mountains.
Together, we discovered spectacular viewpoints, swam in natural rock pools, and soaked up the Mediterranean charm of the small villages. Whether enjoying a cup of Poncha in a cozy bar or having a picnic with a sea view, Madeira gave us unforgettable moments, plenty of laughter, and the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure.

Getting to Madeira
Provider: TAP Air Portugal
Cost: 508 € per person (including checked baggage)
Duration: Outbound flight approx. 6 hours 30 minutes, return flight approx. 8 hours 45 minutes including a stopover
Our journey to Madeira began in July 2025 with a flight from Frankfurt via Lisbon to Funchal, booked with TAP Air Portugal. We paid 508 € per person, including checked baggage. However, the adventure started right away: shortly before the planned landing in Funchal, we were denied permission to land due to bad weather. Instead, our plane turned around and flew the entire route back to Lisbon.
Unexpectedly, we landed again in the Portuguese capital and spent a spontaneous night there before finally taking a replacement flight to Funchal about 30 hours later.
Two days later, we finally reached Madeira.
Our Accommodation in Madeira
The Views Baía
Location
The hotel is situated above Funchal, offering expansive views over the city and the sea. The old town of Funchal as well as numerous restaurants, shops, and attractions are easily accessible by car or on foot.
Funchal Airport: approx. 25 minutes (20 km)
Funchal city center: approx. 10 minutes on foot
Câmara de Lobos: approx. 15 minutes (10 km)
Cost
From around €140 per night (depending on season and room category)
Value for money: Good to very good
✔ Positives
Very friendly and attentive staff
Generous breakfast and dinner selection, including buffet or à la carte restaurant on the upper floor
Stylishly designed rooms with modern amenities
Rooftop pool with panoramic views
Padel tennis court and other leisure facilities
Pleasant atmosphere, especially in the spa and lounge area
✖ Negatives
Cleanliness in some areas left something to be desired; our room did not fully meet expectations, which we reported to the staff
Too few sun loungers available at the pool for the number of guests
Conclusion
The Views Baía is a modern hotel with a stylish ambiance, excellent location, and many extras, perfect for those who value good food, relaxed design, and a great view over Funchal. Despite minor shortcomings in cleanliness and limited pool loungers, we had a very enjoyable stay overall. Ideal for a relaxing break with comfort and atmosphere, definitely a great choice on Madeira.

Getting Around Madeira
Madeira offers various ways to get around the island. Public buses connect the larger towns and are an affordable option, but they are not always flexible for reaching more remote destinations. For shorter trips or spontaneous rides, ride-hailing services like Uber or Bolt are also available.
For maximum freedom and flexibility, however, renting a car is recommended. This way, you can travel independently, reach remote places, and set your own pace.
We decided to rent a car and booked it for 8 days.
Cost
The rental car cost us a total of 168 euros for 8 days. This included full insurance and unlimited mileage. It was a Fiat 500 with a manual transmission.
Provider
We booked through Check24 with “Driving Madeira Rent-a-Car.” The pick-up was not at the airport but directly opposite our hotel.
Tip
It’s best to book your rental car in advance to secure the best prices and availability. Picking up the car at the airport is often very convenient and saves transfer time.
The Best Swimming Spots on Madeira
During our time on Madeira, we unfortunately only managed to visit a few swimming spots, but the ones we did see were absolutely impressive. Madeira is not a typical beach island, but rather a place for natural pools, rocky coasts, and spectacular swimming spots with a rugged Atlantic charm.
Despite the limited time, we discovered two special swimming places that left a lasting impression on us with their scenic surroundings, clear water, and unique atmosphere.
In this section, we introduce these two spots—perfect for a refreshing break with a great view.
Porto Moniz
Location
Porto Moniz is located on the northwest coast of Madeira and is famous for its impressive natural lava pools embedded directly into the volcanic rocky coastline. The town is easily accessible and also offers restaurants, cafés, and a lovely promenade with sea views.
Our Impression
A unique swimming experience: The natural seawater pools were formed by cooled lava and offer crystal-clear water in a safe environment, even when the Atlantic is rough outside. We especially loved the mix of rugged nature and protected swimming fun. Besides the freely accessible natural pools, there is a well-maintained facility with showers, changing rooms, and sunbathing areas.
Cost
Entrance fee to the paid facility: €3 per person (as of July 2025)
Parking
Several public parking lots are available nearby. During the high season, we recommend arriving early as it fills up quickly.
Conclusion
Porto Moniz is a real highlight for anyone wanting to swim on Madeira, spectacular, safe, and very different from typical beaches. Ideal for families, nature lovers, and anyone wanting to experience the special charm of the lava pools. Highly recommended!

Lido Galomar
Location
Lido Galomar is located in Caniço de Baixo on Madeira’s south coast, just about 15 minutes east of Funchal. This well-maintained bathing facility sits spectacularly on a rocky plateau directly above the Atlantic Ocean, overlooking the clear, deep blue waters of the Garajau Marine Reserve.
Our Impression
A stylish, well-equipped swimming spot with direct access to the Atlantic via ladders and bathing platforms, providing safe entry into the water. The crystal-clear sea invites swimming, snorkeling, or simply cooling off. The facility offers showers, changing rooms, and a bistro with sea views—perfect for a relaxing day by the water. The location right by the marine reserve is especially appealing and popular with divers.
Cost
Entrance fee: €8 per person (as of July 2025)
Parking
Limited free parking is available nearby. Alternatively, the facility is easily accessible by bus or taxi from Funchal.
Note
There are only a limited number of loungers and seats, especially on sunny days, these fill up quickly. Arriving early is recommended!
Conclusion
Lido Galomar is ideal for those who want to swim in style and close to nature, with breathtaking views and access to one of Madeira’s most beautiful coastal areas. If you don’t miss sandy beaches and prefer to relax above the Atlantic, you’ll feel right at home here. Despite the minor limitation on loungers, it’s absolutely recommended!

Winetasting - Blandy's
Location
Blandy’s Wine Lodge is located in the center of Funchal in a historic building full of charm. Old barrels, dark wood, and a beautiful courtyard create an authentic atmosphere.
Tour & Tasting
For €20 per person, we enjoyed an interesting tour through the historic wine cellars, where we learned about the Blandy family history and the production of Madeira wine. Afterwards, we tasted three different Madeira wines, ranging from dry to sweet.
Tour Languages
The tour and tasting are available in German, English, Portuguese, French, and Spanish.
Payment & Purchase
After the tasting, you can buy the sampled wines as well as other products directly in the shop. Card payment is accepted without any problems.
Our Impression
The tour was informative and well-structured. We especially liked the historic atmosphere of the lodge. However, the three Madeira wines did not fully convince us in terms of taste, but of course, that is a matter of personal preference.
Conclusion
A worthwhile visit for anyone wanting to learn about Madeira wine in an authentic setting. Informative, well-organized, and reasonably priced. Ideal for wine lovers and the curious alike!

Besides other wine merchants and producers like Henriques & Henriques, Vinhos Barbeito, and Pereira D’Oliveira, we unfortunately didn’t have the chance to visit them. Due to holidays and celebrations on Madeira, they were closed. We look forward to discovering them and enjoying wine tastings there on our next visit.

At the end point of the wicker sled ride in Monte, directly opposite the taxi ranks, is the bus stop “Antes CZ CAM Monte.” Several taxi drivers were waiting there and actively approached tourists, offering overpriced rides. When we politely declined because we wanted to take the bus, they became increasingly pushy and tried to persuade us otherwise. They claimed there was heavy traffic, the next bus wouldn’t arrive for an hour, and it would be overcrowded anyway.

One of the most spectacular hikes on Madeira and a must for nature lovers. The route offers breathtaking views above the clouds, impressive mountain scenery, and many unforgettable photo opportunities. Some sections involve narrow ridges and steep steps, so surefootedness is required. With good visibility, the tour is an amazing experience; however, it can be challenging in foggy conditions.

The starting point is the parking lot on the ER110, about an hour’s drive from Funchal.
Our Impression
A varied route through lush laurel forests, alongside levadas and impressive waterfalls. The path is well signposted and generally pleasant to walk, though some sections are steep or slippery. The descent to the 25 Springs cascade is narrow and often crowded. The natural scenery with streams, moss-covered rocks, and dense greenery feels truly magical. Cascata dos Anjos
Location
The Cascata dos Anjos is located on the old coastal road (ER101) near Ponta do Sol in southwest Madeira. The waterfall cascades directly over the road, creating a unique sight right on the cliffside with views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Our Impression
A particularly photogenic spot where water falls over a rock wall onto the road. In the past, it was possible to drive through the waterfall by car, but the road is now closed to vehicles. Still, the short detour is worthwhile: you can easily reach the waterfall on foot and experience this natural spectacle up close.
Access & Parking
The road is currently closed to cars, but access is possible on foot
Free parking is available nearby
No official opening hours, accessible anytime
Note
The ground can be slippery, so sturdy footwear is recommended. If you want to take photos, waterproof equipment is advisable.

A short but worthwhile detour with beautiful scenery. Even though driving through is no longer possible, Cascata dos Anjos remains a charming natural highlight and an exceptional photo opportunity.

Cristo Rei
Location
Cristo Rei is located near Garajau on Madeira’s south coast, east of Funchal. The Christ statue stands on a cliff with unobstructed views over the Atlantic Ocean and is easily accessible, making it a great spot for a quick stop.

We made a short stop here on our way back from swimming. The statue is smaller than expected but beautifully situated. From the viewing platform, you get a wide view of the coastline. A peaceful, photogenic spot, perfect for a moment of rest.
Access & Parking
Easily reachable by car, taxi, or bus. Free parking is available right at the statue.

A short, worthwhile stop with great views, ideal as a break during excursions along the south coast.

The island is compact but incredibly varied, perfect for those who enjoy being active while soaking up nature and tranquility. We would gladly return anytime, with hiking boots and swimwear in tow.
