Our Trip to Sardinia
In August 2024, we embarked on our journey to Sardinia – an island that enchants with its breathtaking beaches and charming coastal towns. Our flight took us from Frankfurt to Cagliari, from where we traveled directly north to our accommodations.
For our ten-day stay in Sardinia, we chose two locations: one near Olbia and the other near Alghero. From there, we explored the island’s most beautiful spots, enjoyed the serenity of the northern coastal regions, and immersed ourselves in Sardinia’s stunning nature and Mediterranean charm.

Our trip to Sardinia began in August 2024 with a flight from Frankfurt via Zurich to Cagliari with Lufthansa and Edelweiss. After landing, we picked up our rental car directly at the airport and headed north. The approximately three-hour drive took us through diverse landscapes, from Mediterranean plains to picturesque coastal stretches, where our first accommodation was located.
How to Reach Sardinia

Sardinia has three international airports served by various airlines:
- Cagliari Elmas Airport (CAG) – Southern Sardinia
- Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB) – Northeastern Sardinia

For those traveling with their own car, there are several ferry connections to Sardinia:

Our Conclusion on Sardinia
Sardinia truly impressed us! The beaches are absolutely stunning, the water is turquoise, and the nature is so diverse. There’s something beautiful to discover around every corner. The food was definitely another highlight: delicious pizza, fresh pasta, and really good local wines.
One small downside: planning ahead and booking tickets for the most beautiful beaches was quite a hassle, sometimes a bit more spontaneity would have been more relaxing.
Still, we would definitely visit Sardinia again. The combination of nature, beaches, great food, and that laid-back Italian lifestyle makes the island simply unforgettable.

Sardinia offers fantastic drone photo opportunities with its rugged coasts, turquoise waters, and scenic landscapes. To avoid any issues with authorities while flying, you should follow the applicable rules. There are clear regulations regarding maximum flight altitude, registration, insurance, and specific restrictions.
Maximum Altitude and Visual Line of Sight
Maximum altitude: In the open category, you may fly up to 120 meters.
Visual line of sight (VLOS): The drone must always remain within sight. Night flights are only allowed under specific conditions.
Registration and Authorization
Registration: As a drone pilot, you must be registered in an EU country. Your e-ID is recognized in Italy. To use the interactive map of no-fly zones on D-Flight, you need an active account. Registration via the D-Flight portal is free.
Drone License
For drones over 250 grams, an EU drone license is required. Depending on the weight and usage category, additional requirements or tests may apply.
Permits
Additional permits may be required for flights over nature reserves, airports, or other high-risk areas.
Insurance
Liability insurance is mandatory for all drone flights.
