Drones in the Seychelles – Rules, Tips & Important Information
The Seychelles, with their dreamlike beaches, lush forests, and unique island landscapes, are a true paradise for drone pilots. But to make sure your footage doesn’t land you in trouble with the authorities, you must follow the official rules. There are clear regulations regarding flight altitude, registration, permits, and designated no-fly zones that you need to be aware of.
Maximum Altitude & Visual Line of Sight
Maximum altitude: On the Seychelles, drones are limited to a maximum of 61 meters above ground and only in uncontrolled airspace.
Visual Line of Sight (VLOS): Your drone must always remain within your visual line of sight. Night flights are not permitted.
Registration & Permits
Registration: All drones weighing 200 grams or more must be registered with the Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA). Registration is free and done via the SCAA Drones Database. You will need:
a passport-style photo
a photo of your drone
a photo of the drone’s serial number
Important: Accounts without a registered drone will be deleted.
No-fly zone maps: The SCAA provides digital maps for each island (e.g., Mahé, Praslin, La Digue). These maps clearly indicate where drone flights are permitted and where they are prohibited.
Permits: In certain areas (e.g., towns, busy locations, or security-sensitive zones), a special permit is required.
Insurance & Age Limit
Insurance: Drone insurance is not legally required, but it is highly recommended.
No-Fly Zones & Restrictions
Airports & heliports: Always keep a safe distance, flights near these areas are strictly prohibited.
Towns & crowds: Flying over towns, public gatherings, or events is not allowed without prior authorization.
Private property & industrial sites: Flights are prohibited without permission from the property owner.

1. Renting a Car
Renting a car is a flexible way to explore Mahé. We had a car for three days, which cost around €30 per day. This allowed us to reach remote beaches and viewpoints with ease. The roads are sometimes narrow and winding, but generally good to drive on.
Cost: €30 per day
2. Taking the Bus
For an authentic and budget-friendly way of getting around, we chose the 4-day bus pass. This ticket costs SCR 198 (approx. €12) and allows unlimited rides for four days. It can be purchased at the bus terminal in Victoria or in some small supermarkets. The buses are a great way to discover the island, but keep in mind that schedules are not always strictly followed and services often stop running early in the evening.
Cost: approx. €12 – 4-day ticket
The Best Beaches on Mahé
During our time on Mahé, we explored a variety of beaches – from expansive, popular shorelines to hidden, tranquil coves. Each beach had its own unique charm, but some stood out as truly unforgettable.
In this section, we introduce you to the three most stunning beaches that captivated us with their breathtaking scenery, relaxing atmosphere, and memorable experiences.
Anse Major
Location:
Anse Major is located on the remote northwest coast of Mahé and can only be reached on foot or by boat.
Hike to Anse Major:
The hike starts in Bel Ombre, near Beau Vallon Beach, and takes approximately 45 minutes through the Morne Seychellois National Park.
Entrance Fee:
Since the trail passes through the national park, there is a fee of 100 SCR (around €7) per person, payable only by credit card.
Trail Description:
- The well-marked path begins at a small parking area.
- It leads through shaded Takamaka trees and lush vegetation.
- After a few minutes, stunning views of the turquoise ocean and rugged coastline open up.
- The trail is mostly flat but can be rocky in some places – sturdy footwear is recommended.
Our Experience:
After the hike, we were rewarded with a breathtaking, untouched beach. Anse Major is an idyllic bay with soft golden sand, framed by impressive granite boulders. The crystal-clear water was perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
Return by Boat:
Instead of hiking back, we opted for a relaxing boat ride. Boats are available directly at the beach to take visitors back to Beau Vallon Beach. The ride took just 15 minutes and offered spectacular views of the coastline.
Boat Timings: Usually available until around 5:00 PM.
Cost: Prices may vary, so it’s best to check on-site.
Conclusion:
The combination of a scenic hike and a relaxing boat ride made Anse Major one of our absolute favorite beaches on Mahé. If you’re looking for a little adventure away from the crowds, this beach is a must-visit.

Beau Vallon Beach
Location:
Beau Vallon Beach is situated on the northwest coast of Mahé and is one of the most famous and vibrant beaches in the Seychelles.
Our Experience:
Beau Vallon Beach offers a lively and dynamic atmosphere. The long, wide stretch of fine golden sand and clear waters attract both locals and travelers alike. In the late afternoon and evening, the beach becomes even more bustling with activity.
Along the promenade, numerous restaurants and bars serve fresh seafood, Creole specialties, and refreshing drinks. One evening, we enjoyed cocktails at a cozy beach bar, played Uno, and watched the sun slowly disappear beyond the horizon – a truly unforgettable moment.
Conclusion:
If you’re looking for a lively beach with restaurants and bars, Beau Vallon is the perfect spot. However, for those seeking solitude and relaxation, Mahé offers more secluded beaches better suited for unwinding.

Anse Takamaka Beach is located on the southwest coast of Mahé, known for its stunning turquoise waters and impressive granite rock formations.
Our Experience:
Anse Takamaka is a breathtakingly beautiful, natural beach with soft sand and a picturesque backdrop of swaying palm trees and massive boulders. Despite its beauty, it remains uncrowded, making it the perfect spot to soak in the tranquility and paradise-like ambiance.
Depending on the season, the ocean can get quite wavy, so caution is advised when swimming. A highlight of our visit was the charming beachfront restaurant, where we enjoyed a relaxing lunch with delicious Creole cuisine.
Conclusion:
Anse Takamaka is ideal for those seeking a peaceful, unspoiled beach away from the crowds. The stunning scenery and serene atmosphere make it one of our absolute favorites on Mahé.

Anse Intendance is located on the southern coast of Mahé and is renowned for its long, untouched sandy beach and breathtaking panorama of turquoise waters and lush greenery.
Our Experience:
Anse Intendance captivates with its raw, natural beauty. The fine white sand and picturesque granite boulders make it one of the island’s most stunning beaches. Since there is no protective reef, the waves can be strong depending on the season, making swimming challenging at times.
Conclusion:
For those who love unspoiled nature and dramatic coastal scenery, Anse Intendance is a must-visit. It’s the perfect place to experience the beauty of the Seychelles away from the usual tourist spots.

Anse Patates quickly became one of my favorite beaches on La Digue. The fine white sand, turquoise waters, and stunning granite boulders create a true paradise. Despite its small size, the beach exudes a special sense of tranquility, especially in the morning or late afternoon.
The crystal-clear water is perfect for a refreshing dip, although the waves can sometimes be stronger depending on the weather. Snorkeling is possible along the rocks, but it’s important to be mindful of currents.

Our Impression:
Anse Severe is an idyllic beach with fine white sand and calm, turquoise waters. Thanks to the offshore reef, the sea here is usually very calm, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. In the afternoon, the low sun bathes the scenery in a beautiful golden light.
Along the beach, you’ll find small stands selling fresh coconuts and snacks—perfect for a short break in the shade of the palm trees.

Our Impression:
Grand Anse captivates with its vastness, fine white sand, and the deep blue of the ocean. The backdrop of towering granite boulders and swaying palm trees makes this beach especially spectacular.
The water is crystal clear, but caution is advised when swimming, as the currents here can be strong, and there are no coral reefs to break the waves. However, the beach is perfect for sunbathing, strolling, and relaxing in pristine nature.
