Shaped by endless savannas, majestic mountains, and an impressive coastline, the country offers unforgettable experiences for nature lovers and adventurers alike.

Cape Town with its iconic Table Mountain, the vibrant metropolis of Johannesburg, and the scenic Garden Route are just a few of the highlights that enchant visitors. Vaccination Recommendations for Traveling to South Africa – RKI (as of April 2025)

1. Check & Update Standard Vaccinations

Make sure all routine vaccinations are up to date:

  • Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Polio

  • Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella

  • Influenza & COVID-19

2. Travel Vaccinations for South Africa

Recommendations depend on duration, itinerary, and activities:

  • Hepatitis A: Recommended for all travelers (transmission via contaminated food/water).

  • Hepatitis B: For longer stays or close contact with the local population.

  • Typhoid: Only in case of special risk (basic hygiene conditions, rural areas).

  • Rabies: For extended stays or close contact with animals, especially in rural areas.

  • Dengue: Only for long-term stays with high mosquito exposure.

3. Malaria

  • Pathogen: Malaria tropica (Plasmodium falciparum) > 99% of cases.

Risk Areas:

Risk LevelRegions / Notes
High, year-roundNortheast & East Mpumalanga (Kruger & nearby parks), North & Northeast Limpopo; Sept–May
Medium, seasonalSame regions June–August
Low, year-roundKwaZulu-Natal (northeast incl. Tugela, Durban, Tembe, Ndumu, iSimangaliso, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi); Waterberg incl. Marakele, Madikwe; parts of Limpopo & Mpumalanga (except high-risk areas)
Malaria-freeSouthern regions

Protective Measures:

  • Consistent mosquito protection: DEET-based repellent, light long-sleeved clothing, mosquito nets at night.

  • Chemoprophylaxis: In high-risk areas, preventive medication is recommended (consult your doctor).

  • Stand-by emergency treatment: For medium-risk areas in remote regions (>48h from medical care), carry standby medication for self-treatment.

Note: This summary is based on recommendations from RKI, STIKO, and DTG.
Individual consultation with a travel medicine specialist or family doctor before departure is strongly advised.

Entry to South Africa – As of 2025 (according to the Federal Foreign Office)

1. Travel Documents

  • Required: Passport or temporary passport.

  • Not sufficient: Identity card or temporary identity card.

  • Children: Child passports are not accepted, only valid passports.

  • Validity: Must be valid for at least 30 days beyond the departure date, with at least two blank pages for entry/exit stamps.

  • When traveling on to neighboring countries, make sure there are additional free pages available.

2. Visa

  • No visa required for German nationals for tourist, visit, or business stays of up to 90 days.

  • Upon entry, a visitor’s visa is usually issued for the duration of the stay (maximum 90 days).

  • For longer stays or other purposes (e.g., study, work, project stays), a visa must be applied for in advance at the South African Embassy in Berlin.

  • Holders of refugee travel documents or similar documents are subject to visa requirements.

3. Overstay (Exceeding the Permitted Stay)

  • Any overstay, even by a few days, leads to being declared an “undesirable person” and results in a re-entry ban of 1 to 5 years.

  • This also applies if an extension application is pending but no decision has been made before departure.

  • The Federal Foreign Office cannot intervene in such cases.

Tip: Always comply with the granted residence permit.

4. Minors

  • Minors require their own passport.

  • Recommended: also carry a birth certificate and, if applicable, a consent letter from the non-traveling parent.

  • If a minor is traveling alone, the following are required:

    • International birth certificate (or English translation),

    • Parental consent letter in English,

    • Copies of parents’/guardians’ passports, custody order, or death certificate if applicable,

    • Contact details of parents/guardians,

    • Confirmation letter and passport copy of the person the child is traveling to.

Travel & Repatriation Insurance

For South Africa, valid travel and international health insurance is strongly recommended. Make sure your insurance also covers the costs of repatriation to Germany.

Without adequate coverage, medical treatment, hospital stays, or emergency return flights must be paid out of pocket, which can quickly deplete all your savings. In South Africa, it is also common practice that medical bills must be settled immediately or before discharge from a hospital. In the worst case, non-payment may even result in being denied exit from the country.

SIM Card in South Africa

Right after landing in Cape Town, we picked up a SIM card at the airport, a practical way to be reachable immediately and plan flexibly.

Main Providers in South Africa

MTN

  • Package: 20 GB daytime + 20 GB nighttime + 60 free minutes

  • Price: approx. €33, SIM card free of charge

  • Experience: The split into day and night data was inconvenient. Despite low usage, our data was already used up within a week. Even after topping up, the issue repeated itself.

Vodacom

  • Recognizable by its red branding (similar to Vodafone)

  • Packages in a similar price range as MTN

  • Experience: Friends of ours used Vodacom and had no issues, even with heavy usage. Service and data management seemed more stable.

  • Recommendation: Looking back, we would rather recommend Vodacom, especially in cities and for intensive use.

Other Providers / Alternatives

Telkom

  • Offers prepaid data packages for tourists

  • Good coverage in cities, more limited outside Cape Town

  • Advantage: Affordable options, often bundled with calls and SMS

Cell C

  • Partly uses the MTN network, good urban coverage

  • Prepaid packages with data, minutes, and SMS available

  • Widely sold in supermarkets, gas stations, and electronics stores

Rain

  • Data-only provider (4G), no voice services

  • Unlimited data packages available, usually ordered online

  • Advantage: Cost-effective for heavy mobile internet users

Where to Buy SIM Cards

SIM cards are available at the airport, in shopping malls, supermarkets, and electronics stores. In Cape Town, you’ll find MTN, Vodacom, Telkom, and Cell C shops both at the airport and in the city center.

Tips for Use

  • Vodacom is generally considered the most reliable for mobile data and calls.

  • MTN is also widespread, but data management may vary.

  • If you only need data, Rain can be an affordable alternative.

Our Trip to South Africa

In January 2025, I spent a little over three weeks in South Africa with a friend, a trip full of new impressions, adventures, and unforgettable experiences.

We spent the first two weeks in Cape Town, where we took part in an educational leave program. The city captivated us with its stunning natural surroundings, vibrant culture, and fascinating history. Outside of class, we used every free moment to explore the region’s highlights: the majestic Table Mountain, the beautiful beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, and the iconic Cape of Good Hope. A special highlight was our excursion to the wine regions, where we visited the stunning Babylonstoren estate and explored several wineries aboard the Franschhoek Wine Tram, a unique way to enjoy the diversity of South African wines amid breathtaking scenery.

After our time in Cape Town, we treated ourselves to a well-deserved vacation week. A truly magical experience was our four-day stay in Kruger National Park. On exciting safaris, we encountered elephants, lions, giraffes, and many other wild animals in their natural habitat, an experience that left a lasting impression on us.

South Africa completely enchanted me with its diversity, hospitality, and natural beauty. This trip was more than just a vacation, it was a life-changing experien

Cape Town

Cape Town truly has it all: stunning nature, cool cafés and bars, dreamy beaches, and endless adventure! The city at the foot of Table Mountain won us over from the very first moment, with breathtaking views, laid-back beach days, and unforgettable experiences.

We soaked in the views from the top of Table Mountain, admired the coastline from a helicopter, and even paraglided over the city. Beyond the thrills, we enjoyed Cape Town’s relaxed vibe in cozy cafés and restaurants, discovering some real favorite spots along the way.

The food scene blew us away, from vibrant markets to top-notch restaurants. One of the absolute highlights was our tour with the Franschhoek Wine Tram, where we visited some of the region’s finest wineries.

Getting to Cape Town

Airline: Condor
Cost: €1,180 per person incl. checked baggage (open-jaw ticket incl. domestic flight to Kruger National Park)
Duration: Approx. 14 hours (incl. layover in Johannesburg)

Our journey began with a flight from Frankfurt to Cape Town via Johannesburg with Condor. After about 10 hours, we landed in Johannesburg, where we transferred to a short domestic flight to Cape Town. Once we arrived, we took a relaxed Uber ride to our accommodation.

Important Arrival Tips – Johannesburg & Cape Town Airports

At Johannesburg Airport, some men in yellow vests—posing as airport staff—grabbed our luggage without asking and brought it to the check-in counter. When we tried to take our bags back, they held on to them aggressively and demanded money for their “help.”
Tip: Do not let anyone take your luggage.

At Cape Town Airport, several taxi drivers tried persistently to steer us away from the official Uber pick-up area. They repeatedly claimed we were going the wrong way and directed us in the opposite direction. Thankfully, the Uber app guided us correctly, they were clearly trying to redirect us for their own fares.
Tip: Trust your app and don’t get discouraged or misled!

The Best Beaches in Cape Town

During our time in Cape Town, we explored a variety of beaches, from wide, popular stretches of sand to hidden, peaceful coves. Each beach had its own unique charm, but a few stood out and left a lasting impression.

In this section, we’ll introduce you to our three favorite beaches, each remembered for its breathtaking scenery, relaxed atmosphere, and unforgettable moments.

Clifton Beaches

Location:
The Clifton Beaches are located along Cape Town’s Atlantic coastline and consist of four stunning stretches of beach with soft white sand and clear water.

Our Impression:
Despite the cold water, the beaches are a popular spot to soak in the beautiful surroundings. Clifton 4th Beach, in particular, stands out with its relaxed vibe and less wind compared to other beaches in Cape Town. Since there are no restaurants or bars directly at the beach, many visitors bring their own snacks and drinks.

Conclusion:
Perfect for a laid-back beach day with a breathtaking backdrop, ideal for sunbathing and unwinding!

Camps Bay

Location:
Camps Bay Beach is situated along Cape Town’s Atlantic coastline and is one of the city’s most famous beaches, surrounded by restaurants and bars with ocean views.

Our Impression:
Although often considered a hotspot, the beach didn’t fully win us over. Visually, we found other Cape Town beaches more appealing, and the many persistent beach vendors disrupted the relaxed vibe. It was also quite windy during our visit, with fine sand blowing everywhere.

Conclusion:
Nice for a short stop or a drink at one of the beachfront bars, but for a relaxing beach day, there are more peaceful and beautiful options in Cape Town.

Boulders Beach

Location:
Boulders Beach is located in Simon’s Town, about an hour from Cape Town, and is famous for its colony of African penguins.

Our Impression:
The beach itself is quite small, but the penguins make it truly special. You can observe them up close from wooden walkways without disturbing them. If you want to swim, there’s a separate area nestled between the rocks, but be warned, the water is ice cold!

Conclusion:
A must-visit for animal lovers, though not your typical beach for relaxing or swimming. Best to arrive early before the crowds!

Muizenberg Beach

Location:
Muizenberg Beach is located along False Bay and is best known for its colorful beach huts and reputation as a top surf spot.

Our Impression:
The vibrant huts make for a popular photo backdrop, and the long sandy beach is great for walks. The water is warmer than on the Atlantic side but often quite rough. What stood out most: plenty of surf schools and beginners in the water, as Muizenberg is considered an ideal place to learn how to surf.

Conclusion:
A great beach for beginner surfers and photography lovers, but not the most visually stunning in Cape Town. If you’re planning to swim, be sure to pay attention to shark warnings.

Dining and Nightlife in Cape Town

Kloof Street House

Location: Located on Kloof Street, right in the heart of Cape Town.

Our Impression:
A stylish restaurant with a unique and cozy atmosphere. The cocktail menu is impressive, the Espresso Martini and Passionfruit Martini were definite highlights. Add to that excellent food and attentive service, and you’ve got a memorable dining experience.

Conclusion:
A must-visit for a special night out in Cape Town. Be sure to make a reservation!

Mama Africa

Location: On Long Street, right in the vibrant center of Cape Town.

Our Impression:
The restaurant is often recommended, but unfortunately, the flavors didn’t live up to expectations. The dishes felt rather bland and underseasoned, maybe we just had bad luck. However, the atmosphere was pleasant, and the staff was friendly.

Conclusion:
A well-known spot with a great vibe, but for us, not the most flavorful experience.

The Conscious Kitchen

Location: Centrally located, perfect for a relaxing lunch break.

Our Impression:
We visited almost daily  and for good reason! Along with great coffee, they offered delicious smoothies, bowls, snacks, and bagels. Our favorites: the Espresso-Banana-Peanut smoothie, as well as the iced coffee and iced mocha.

Conclusion:
A great spot for a healthy boost in between, highly recommended!

Truth Coffee

Location: Centrally located in Cape Town, known for its unique steampunk atmosphere.

Our Impression:
A café with a special vibe and excellent coffee. In addition to top-quality espresso, they also serve a fantastic espresso martini. Perfect for coffee lovers!

Conclusion:
One of the best spots in Cape Town for high-quality coffee, whether pure or in a cocktail.

Egghead Diner

Location: A modern diner in Cape Town, perfect for a relaxed breakfast or lunch.

Our Impression:
Delicious comfort food in a stylish atmosphere. The sandwiches and burgers are a must-try,  juicy, well-seasoned, and made with fresh ingredients.

Conclusion:
If you’re craving a great burger or sandwich, this place is a must-visit!

Our Local

Location: A hidden gem in Cape Town with a charming ambiance.

Our Impression:
An absolute oasis with beautiful decor, a relaxed atmosphere, and friendly service. The drinks are excellent, and the food is fresh and delicious, perfect for a little break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Conclusion:
A true feel-good spot! If you’re looking for a cozy place with great food and drinks, this is the perfect place.

Sonny & Irene

Location: Stylish café and restaurant in Cape Town.

Our Impression:
The food and drinks are of good quality, and the atmosphere is modern and appealing. However, it didn’t impress us as much as other spots in the city.

Conclusion:
A solid place to visit, but personally, it wasn’t a standout for us.

Nice to Matcha

Location: Modern matcha café in Cape Town.

Our Impression:
Even though I’m not usually a big matcha fan, I was pleasantly surprised by the creative variations, especially those with coconut milk and strawberry. There’s also a nice selection of other drinks and snacks.

Conclusion:
Perfect for those who love matcha or want to try out new flavor combinations!

Location: Charming café with small shops selling clothing, jewelry, and souvenirs.

Our Impression:
A great spot for a relaxed breakfast in a pleasant atmosphere. While the French Toast didn’t quite win us over, the Turkish Egg was absolutely delicious. Perfect for a cozy start to the day.

Conclusion:
Tasty breakfast, laid-back vibes, and the chance to do a little shopping, definitely worth a visit!

Maggy Days

Fazit:
Leckeres Frühstück in guter Lage – eine klare Empfehlung!

Una Más – Mezcaleria

Our Impression:
A small, authentic bar with a great selection of Mezcal and creative cocktails. The Margaritas were especially delicious!

Conclusion:
Perfect for a relaxed evening with great drinks in a laid-back atmosphere.

The Bungalow

Our Impression:
Unfortunately, a big disappointment. The value for money is completely off, small portions and tasteless food. The service was chaotic: long waiting times, inattentive staff, and food and drinks weren’t served at the same time.

Conclusion:
Out of all the restaurants in Cape Town, this was our worst experience. Absolutely not recommended!

New York Bagels

Our Impression:
Simple, straightforward, and delicious. Fresh juices and a great selection of bagels, perfect for a quick, tasty snack.

Conclusion:
If you’re a bagel fan, this place is definitely worth a visit!

JARRYDS Brunch & Bistro

Our Impression:
Delicious juices and smoothies, but the highlight was definitely the banana bread, unbelievably good!

Conclusion:
A great spot for a delightful breakfast or a healthy snack.

The Wok Bar

Our Impression:
Delicious bao buns and perfectly seasoned edamame, ideal for a quick yet flavorful snack.

Conclusion:
Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving some Asian delicacies!

Lions Head – Sunrise Hike

Location

Lion’s Head is located right next to Table Mountain and is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Cape Town. From here, you get a breathtaking panoramic view of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding mountain ranges.

Guided Hike & Safety

We joined a guided sunrise hike in a small group, which made the tour not only safer but also really relaxing – a great choice, as the view from the summit at sunrise was simply stunning. Unfortunately, this popular hiking trail has seen occasional attacks, so a guided tour is the safer option.

Tour Details

The hike lasts about 3.5 hours and starts early in the morning, depending on the season. Equipped with headlamps, we made our way up the steep path step by step with our guide. The climb requires some fitness, and at some points, you even need to do a bit of scrambling. Once at the top, we were rewarded with a spectacular view: the city slowly came to life while the sky glowed in warm colors – a truly goosebumps moment!

Our Impression

The hike was an absolute highlight of our trip! Our guide ensured a safe and enjoyable experience, and watching the sunrise from the summit was simply magical.

Conclusion

A must for anyone who enjoys being active and wants to experience Cape Town from a unique perspective! If you start in the dark, we highly recommend booking a guided tour for safety reasons.

Table Mountain

Location:
Table Mountain, one of Cape Town’s most iconic landmarks, is located in the Table Mountain National Park and offers a stunning view of the city, the Atlantic Ocean, and the surrounding landscape.

Operating Hours:
The cable car operates daily, but it is weather-dependent. Current operating times should be checked on the official website in advance.

There are various ticket options for the cable car – round trip or one-way tickets for hikers. Students can receive a discount by showing a valid student ID.

Table Mountain can be reached either by the cable car or on foot. Several hiking routes lead to the summit, including the popular Platteklip Gorge route, which takes about 2-3 hours. The cable car rotates 360° during the ride, providing spectacular views.

Our Impression:
A visit to Table Mountain is a definite highlight in Cape Town! Whether you go by foot or take the cable car, the view from the top is breathtaking. It’s especially beautiful early in the morning or just before sunset when the light casts a golden glow over the city.

The Mojo Market is located in the trendy Sea Point neighborhood and is a popular meeting spot for food lovers, music fans, and anyone who enjoys a relaxed market atmosphere. Unlike other weekend markets, Mojo Market is open daily, offering a wide range of food, drinks, and live entertainment.

Address: 30 Regent Rd, Sea Point, Cape Town
Opening Hours:

  • Monday – Sunday: 08:00 AM – 11:00 PM

Our Impression:
The food selection is diverse, but we found the vegetarian options to be quite limited. If you’re not into meat or fish, there are fewer exciting choices compared to other markets in Cape Town. The atmosphere didn’t quite win us over either – while other markets charm visitors with their unique vibe, Mojo Market felt more like an indoor food hall with a somewhat busy ambiance. Live music provides entertainment, but overall, we missed the cozy and inviting atmosphere that markets like Oranjezicht or Neighbourgoods offer.

Conclusion:
The Mojo Market is a good option for a quick snack or a drink, but compared to other markets in Cape Town, we found the atmosphere less inviting, and the vegetarian options somewhat disappointing.

Bo-Kaap

A stroll through the cobbled streets is worth it just for the colorful house facades. Notable attractions include:

  • The Bo-Kaap Museum, which tells the story of the community.

  • Auwal Mosque, the oldest mosque in South Africa.

  • Street art and local markets offering a glimpse into the neighborhood’s culture.

Our Impression:
Bo-Kaap has a special atmosphere, vibrant, historic, and unique. The colors and architecture are impressive, and it’s fun to just wander through the streets and soak in the mood. However, the neighborhood can be quite busy, making it hard to find a quiet moment for photos.

Conclusion:
A must-see in Cape Town! Anyone wanting to experience a piece of the city’s history and discover great photo spots should definitely visit.

Safety:
Bo-Kaap is a lively and popular area during the day, but after dark, it’s advisable to be cautious. It’s best not to stay alone or walk around at night and instead use a taxi or Uber for safety.

Kruger National Park

The Kruger National Park is one of the best places to experience Africa’s wildlife up close. Elephants, lions, giraffes, and zebras roam the endless savannas, a true paradise for nature and adventure lovers!

During our stay, we went on a classic safari, where we were lucky enough to spot some of the famous “Big Five.” Watching each animal in its natural habitat was simply fascinating! Another highlight was a relaxed evening drive through the park – the setting sun bathed the landscape in magical light, while the first nocturnal animals began to appear. We rounded off the experience with a picnic right in the middle of nature – a perfect moment to relax and soak it all in.

From Cape Town, we flew with Airlink to Mbombela (Nelspruit, MQP). The flight was pleasant and offered a quick connection to the region around Kruger National Park.

Transfer to the accommodation:
Our lodge provided a private transfer for €46, which took us comfortably from the airport to the hotel.

Alternative travel options:

  • Rental car: For more flexibility, you can drive. The journey takes about 18 to 20 hours, so an overnight stop is recommended.

  • Bus: Long-distance buses to Mbombela are available, but the trip takes over 24 hours and is less comfortable.

Which airport is best depends on the location of your accommodation. Many lodges offer shuttles from specific airports, and they usually mention in their descriptions which airports they service.

Dining and Drinks at the Hotel

Breakfast

Our impression:
The breakfast offered a good variety and was tasty as well. A special highlight was watching zebras antelopes and other animals roaming freely across the grounds while eating. One small downside was that there were no milk alternatives available.

Conclusion:
Delicious breakfast in a unique setting but those who rely on plant based milk might be disappointed.

Dinner

Our impression:
Every evening there was a fixed menu with starter main course and dessert always including a vegetarian option. We traditionally ordered a glass of wine and a margarita, the perfect accompaniment to the meal. Twice a week the menu was replaced by a BBQ buffet which also offered vegetarian alternatives.

Conclusion:
A varied and tasty dinner with a special atmosphere whether menu or BBQ we were never disappointed!

Drinks

Unser Eindruck:

Our time in South Africa was truly amazing! During the study leave at the university in Cape Town, we experienced so much on weekends and afterwards – hiking, paragliding, exploring the wine region, great evenings with good food and parties. The Kruger National Park with safari and picnic was a real highlight to finish.

Next time we will definitely rent a car to be more flexible and spend more time at places like Boulder Beach.

We highly recommend South Africa and are already looking forward to coming back in the next few years!
