Our First Trip to Thailand (October 2022)
In October 2022, we were finally able to cross another country off our bucket list: Thailand. For 2.5 weeks, we immersed ourselves in the beauty and diversity of the country. Our journey began in Frankfurt and took us from Ko Samui to the idyllic islands of Ko Tao and Koh Phangan, then to the breathtaking landscapes of Krabi, the dreamy beaches of Ko Phi Phi, and finally, the vibrant metropolis of Bangkok.
This itinerary offered us a perfect mix of relaxation, adventure, and culture. We were particularly impressed by the diversity of landscapes, the tranquil beaches of Ko Tao, the lively atmosphere of Koh Phangan, the spectacular nature in Krabi, and the bustling streets of Bangkok.
One thing is for sure, Thailand exceeded all our expectations.
Our Second Trip to Thailand (2024)
Thailand fascinated us so much that we returned in 2024, this time with a slightly different route. We explored Phuket and Bangkok again, but also discovered new places like Koh Chang, Koh Kood, and Ko Yao Noi.

Our Impression:
Chaweng Beach is the perfect spot if you want to be in the heart of the action. The beach boasts soft, white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water, ideal for swimming and relaxing. We especially loved the early morning hours when the beach was peaceful, offering a stunning view of the sea.
During the day, you can enjoy a variety of water activities like stand-up paddling or jet skiing, while in the evening, the promenade transforms into a lively hub with restaurants, bars, and beach clubs.
Chaweng Beach offers everything you could want for a classic beach day, a great mix of relaxation and entertainment.
Lamai Beach
Location:
Lamai Beach is located south of Chaweng on the east coast and is the second-largest beach on Ko Samui.
Our Impression:
Compared to Chaweng Beach, Lamai is quieter and has a more relaxed atmosphere. We found it ideal for escaping the crowds and enjoying a peaceful day. The sand is slightly coarser, but the clear water is just as inviting for swimming.
One of the highlights is the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks), just a short walk from the beach. This unique natural attraction draws many visitors and offers great photo opportunities.
Lamai Beach is perfect for those looking for a balance between relaxation and a touch of activity.
Silver Beach
Location:
Silver Beach, also known as Crystal Bay, is located between Chaweng and Lamai on the east coast of Ko Samui.
Our Impression:
This small, hidden beach was a true insider tip for us. Nestled between large granite rocks and surrounded by lush vegetation, Silver Beach offers a picturesque setting, perfect for a relaxing beach day.
The water here is crystal clear and ideal for snorkeling, we even spotted some colorful fish without swimming far out. The beach is less crowded, and the tranquil atmosphere made it one of our favorites on Ko Samui.
Silver Beach is perfect if you’re looking for a peaceful, scenic spot to enjoy nature.

The Big Buddha is one of Ko Samui’s most famous landmarks and an absolute must-see. The impressive golden statue stands 12 meters tall and is visible from afar. We enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere and the stunning views of the sea and surrounding landscape. Visiting in the morning or evening is especially worthwhile, as the temperatures are more pleasant and the lighting makes the statue even more spectacular.
Tip: Be sure to wear appropriate clothing, as this is a religious site.
Na Muang Waterfalls
Location:
The Na Muang Waterfalls are located in the southern interior of the island and are easily accessible by scooter or taxi.
Our Impression:
The Na Muang Waterfalls are a fantastic spot to experience Ko Samui’s natural beauty. The first waterfall is easy to reach and features cascading water flowing into a natural pool—perfect for a refreshing dip. The second waterfall, located higher up, requires a short hike, but the effort is well worth it for the breathtaking views of the surrounding nature.
Tip: Wear sturdy shoes, especially if you plan to hike to the second waterfall.
Ang Thong National Marine Park
Location:
The Ang Thong National Marine Park is located about 35 km west of Ko Samui and is only accessible by boat.
Our Impression:
The Ang Thong National Marine Park is an absolute paradise! This archipelago of 42 small islands features stunning limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and pristine beaches. During our visit, we had the chance to snorkel, kayak, and soak in the breathtaking surroundings. The highlight was the hike to a viewpoint on one of the islands—the panoramic view of the archipelago was simply unforgettable.

Our Impression:
Sairee Beach is the heart of Ko Tao. It offers everything an island lover could wish for, soft white sand, turquoise water, and a lively atmosphere. The sunsets here are particularly spectacular, drawing many visitors every evening.
The beach is perfect for relaxing in the sun, but also for activities like stand-up paddling or beach volleyball. Along the promenade, you’ll find numerous restaurants, bars, and small shops that make for a perfect day.
Sairee Beach is the ideal spot if you’re looking for a mix of relaxation and entertainment. However, for us, it was definitely not the most beautiful beach on Ko Tao.
Shark Bay
Location:
Shark Bay, also known as Thian Og Bay, is located on the southeast coast of Ko Tao.
Entrance Fee:
To access Shark Bay, we had to check in at the reception of the nearby resort, fill out a registration form, and pay a fee of €2.70 per person.
Our Impression:
Shark Bay is the perfect spot for adventure seekers and snorkeling enthusiasts. The water here is crystal clear, and with a bit of luck, you can spot blacktip reef sharks, a truly unique experience!
The beach itself is stunning, with soft sand and calm waters. The bay is also great for a relaxing day by the sea if you want to unwind after an underwater adventure.
Shark Bay perfectly combines underwater exploration with a tranquil beach atmosphere, an absolute highlight on Ko Tao.
Freedom Beach
Location:
Freedom Beach is located at the southern tip of Ko Tao, away from the main tourist paths.
Our Impression:
Freedom Beach is a small gem that offers peace and seclusion. Access requires a fee of 50 THB per person, which also includes entry to the nearby John Suwan Viewpoint, offering breathtaking coastal views.
There is ample parking for scooters at the entrance, making arrival hassle-free. The beach is lined with lush trees that provide shade, though we personally found it a bit overwhelming. The sand is slightly coarse, but the crystal-clear water makes up for it, providing excellent snorkeling opportunities.
Conclusion:
Freedom Beach offers a perfect mix of nature, tranquility, and underwater adventure. The viewpoint alone makes the visit worthwhile, offering one of the best panoramic views on Ko Tao. If you’re looking for a blend of relaxation and exploration, Freedom Beach is a great choice.
Chalok Baan Kao Bay

Chalok Baan Kao Bay is located in the south of Ko Tao and is the third-largest beach on the island after Sairee Beach.
Our Impression:
Chalok Baan Kao Bay stands out with its peaceful atmosphere and relaxed vibe. The beach is less crowded and offers a beautiful setting with soft sand and calm waters. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy the slower pace of the island.
Around the beach, you’ll find small restaurants and cafés that make the visit even more enjoyable. We especially loved how tranquil and untouristy it felt compared to other beaches.

The hike up to John-Suwan Viewpoint is a bit challenging, but it’s absolutely worth the effort. After about 20 minutes of climbing over rocks and through dense jungle, we were rewarded with a spectacular view of Chalok Baan Kao and Thian Og bays. The colors of the sea and the surrounding landscape are simply stunning.
Entrance Fee:
Access to the viewpoint is through Freedom Beach. At the entrance, we paid a fee of €1.50 per person, which includes entry to both the viewpoint and Freedom Beach.

Sun Suwan 360 View – Panoramic Views Over Ko Tao

Sun Suwan 360 View is located in the south of Ko Tao, not far from the John-Suwan viewpoint.
Our Experience:
Compared to John-Suwan, the climb to Sun Suwan 360 View was much easier and less strenuous. Once we reached the top, we were greeted by a 360-degree platform offering breathtaking views of the stunning bays of Shark Bay, Freedom Beach, and Taa Toh Beach. We took our time to soak in the scenery and admire the island from a whole new perspective.

The entrance fee for Sun Suwan 360 View is €1.50 per person.
Conclusion:
Sun Suwan 360 View offers a panoramic view of Ko Tao and is a great choice for those looking for a less demanding climb. It’s the perfect spot to appreciate the island’s beauty in a peaceful setting.
Koh Nang Yuan – A Paradise off the Coast of Ko Tao

Koh Nang Yuan is a small archipelago located just a few kilometers northwest of Ko Tao.
Getting There:
We took a longtail boat from Sairee Beach on Ko Tao to the island. The journey lasted about 15 minutes and cost approximately €8 per person.
Our Experience:
Koh Nang Yuan is renowned for its stunning sandbar that connects three small islands. The crystal-clear water and diverse marine life make the island a perfect spot for snorkeling. One highlight of our visit was the climb to the viewpoint. Although the path is steep and requires sturdy footwear, the view from the top is simply overwhelming.

To reach the summit at 278 meters, you have to climb 1,237 steep steps – a challenging but rewarding experience! Once at the top, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of Krabi’s landscape and the surrounding limestone cliffs.

We took a Grab taxi for the journey and arranged with the driver to pick us up after our visit. The total cost was around €20, which we paid only upon the return trip.

Grab drivers are often open to negotiation and are generally cheaper and more reliable than many tuk-tuks or private drivers.

Monkey Beach is quite small, and we found the situation there somewhat sad. Some tourists didn’t respect the monkeys’ retreat and chased them to take close-up photos, selfies, and videos with their phones and selfie sticks.
Reminder: If you visit Monkey Beach, please keep your distance and respect the animals’ space.
2. Snorkeling & Swimming
This spot was simply a dream and matched our expectations of Thailand perfectly! We had the option to use our own snorkeling gear or borrow one from the provider for free. While snorkeling, we saw many colorful fish, and the atmosphere on board was fantastic.
3. Maya Bay
Maya Bay is a protected, world-famous beach with powdery white sand and crystal-clear water, known as the filming location for the Hollywood movie The Beach.
At the time of our visit, swimming in the sea was prohibited. The Thai military blew whistles to call back anyone who waded deeper than knee-high into the water.
4. Bioluminescence
At the end of the tour, we made a spontaneous stop near the cliffs before returning to the harbor to witness bioluminescence in the dark.
The glowing effect on the water’s surface is mainly produced by tiny, single-celled algae, creating a magical blue shimmer.
Although the bioluminescence was only faint that evening, it was still a beautiful and unforgettable experience.

We took a taxi boat from the pier at the ferry terminal to reach this stunning beach. The short boat ride was relaxing and already offered a great view of the island and the sea.
Our Experience:
During our stay, we only visited this beach and did not explore any beaches on Ko Yao Noi and it was absolutely worth it! Laem Haad Beach impressed us with its untouched beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Since it is rarely crowded, we were able to fully enjoy the natural surroundings. The shallow water is perfect for swimming, and the view of the surrounding islands makes the beach even more special.

A dreamy, almost deserted beach with fine sand and clear water, perfect for those looking to enjoy tranquility and nature.
Activities on Koh Yao Noi

We had limited time in Bangkok, as we arrived in the morning and had to fly back the next day. For this reason, we focused on visiting the Train Market and shopping malls.
Maeklong Railway Market

The Maeklong Railway Market is located about 80 km from Bangkok and is famous for the unique spectacle of a train passing directly through the market. Vendors quickly pull back their goods and awnings, while some stalls remain on the tracks. In addition to fresh produce, spices, and souvenirs, there are plenty of street food stalls. The market is especially busy in the morning.
Our Experience:
Since many tours start early in the morning, we took a Grab (taxi app) to stay flexible. Unfortunately, we arrived in the afternoon when some stalls were already closing, and the market was less crowded. However, the moment when the train passed through was still impressive!
For the return trip, it was difficult to find a Grab. Luckily, there was a nearby bus station, where we could catch a ride back to Bangkok.

Nevertheless, the visit was worthwhile for the unique setting and lively atmosphere on the water.

Location: The hotel is located directly on the beach, and within a 3-minute walk, you can reach the main street with numerous restaurants, cafés, shops, a 7-Eleven, and other amenities.
Cost: €94 per night.
Value for Money: Okay.
Positive: The beachfront location and proximity to the lively main street are great.
Negative: Unfortunately, the reception and hotel staff were not as welcoming as we are used to in Thailand. Upon check-in, we were simply handed a sheet with guest names and were asked to check ourselves off the list, which felt unprofessional. The breakfast was disappointing in terms of quality and taste, and the room was not pleasantly furnished, making us feel uncomfortable during our stay. Additionally, there were no sun loungers or seating areas on the hotel beach, despite what was advertised in the pictures.
Conclusion: If we visit Koh Chang again, we will choose a different hotel.

Getting from Koh Chang to Ko Kood

Duration: Approximately 3 hours 30 minutes
Our journey to Ko Kood was smooth and comfortable. In the morning, a taxi picked us up directly from our hotel and took us to the pier. From there, we boarded the Boonsiri Ferry, which provides a reliable connection to the island.
💡 Tip: Depending on the weather, the pier to the ferry may be flooded – be prepared to walk through some water!
Upon arrival at Ko Kood’s pier, another taxi took us directly to our accommodation. A hassle-free way to reach the island.

Tinkerbell Resort not only offers an idyllic beachfront location but also provides a small selection of complimentary snacks. Throughout the day, guests can enjoy sticky rice coconut ice cream with various toppings, as well as toast and tea. The quality of the snacks was consistently good and added a nice touch to the stay.
Recommendation:
The sticky rice ice cream was our highlight – a perfect combination of creamy ice cream and sweet mango. An ideal refreshment for a break in between!

Recommendation:
The Massaman curry is a must-try – perfectly spiced and wonderfully creamy. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the Mango Sticky Rice!

A stunning, idyllic beach with soft sand and clear waters – perfect for anyone looking to spend a peaceful day in a tropical paradise.
Bang Bao Beach

Bang Bao Beach is situated on the southeastern coast of Ko Kood and is one of the island’s quieter beaches.
Our Impression:
This beach stands out for its relaxed, secluded atmosphere and is far less crowded than other beaches on Ko Kood. The few accommodations in the area blend harmoniously into the natural surroundings, offering a simple yet charming retreat. For those seeking tranquility away from mass tourism, this beach provides the perfect setting with its untouched nature and crystal-clear waters.

Khlong Hin Beach

A hotel directly on the beach offers food and drinks, making it a convenient spot for a refreshing break. Since this beach is less frequented, visitors can fully enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Ko Kood is home to three waterfalls, all freely accessible: Klong Chao Waterfall, Klong Yai Kee Waterfall, and Huang Nam Keaw Waterfall.
Our Experience:
Klong Chao Waterfall is the most famous and frequently visited waterfall on the island. It is easily accessible and features a beautiful natural pool for swimming. For those seeking a quieter spot, Klong Yai Kee Waterfall offers a peaceful alternative—perfect for a relaxing nature experience.
For adventure seekers, Huang Nam Keaw Waterfall is particularly exciting. Until 2012, it was only accessible via a jungle trail, but a road now leads there. Nevertheless, the walk through the tropical forest remains a highlight for hiking enthusiasts.
Tip:
The best time to visit is during the rainy season when the waterfalls carry more water. Sturdy footwear is recommended, as the trails can be slippery.
Kayaking Along the Coast
Experience:
One of the best ways to explore Koh Kood is by kayak. The island’s tranquil bays, lush mangrove forests, and hidden beaches make this activity a true highlight.
Our Experience:
Paddling along the coast provides a unique perspective on the island. You glide over crystal-clear waters, discover untouched beaches, and enjoy the peacefulness of nature. A tour through the mangroves is especially impressive, offering a chance to observe the island’s rich vegetation and possibly spot native wildlife.
Tip:
Many hotels and resorts offer free kayaks for their guests. The best times to paddle are early in the morning or just before sunset when the water is calm. Don’t forget sunscreen and plenty of water.

Snorkeling off the coast of Koh Kood revealed a fascinating underwater world. We encountered colorful schools of fish, pristine coral formations, and even the occasional sighting of rays and sea turtles. The reefs around smaller islands like Ko Rang, accessible by boat, are particularly recommended.
Tip:
If you don’t have your own snorkeling gear, many resorts and dive shops offer rentals. The best conditions are in the morning when the water is calm and visibility is at its clearest.
Boat Tour to the Surrounding Islands – Island Hopping Around Koh Kood
Experience:
A boat tour to nearby islands like Koh Mak or Koh Rang is an absolute highlight on Koh Kood. These tours offer the chance to discover untouched beaches, hidden bays, and breathtaking snorkeling spots.

During our boat tour, we explored the stunning islands in the area. Koh Rang was particularly impressive with its crystal-clear waters and vibrant coral reefs—perfect for snorkeling. Koh Mak, with its relaxed beaches and small restaurants, was also well worth a visit. The tours often include multiple stops, such as sandbanks and secluded lagoons.
Tip:
It’s worth booking a private or small-group tour to enjoy the most beautiful spots without large crowds. Many providers also include lunch and snorkeling equipment—so just sit back and enjoy the island paradise.

After two unforgettable trips through Thailand, we look back on a time filled with special experiences. From the vibrant metropolis of Bangkok to the stunning beaches of Koh Samui, Phuket, and Krabi, and the peaceful islands of Koh Yao Noi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Chang, and Koh Kood – each destination had its own unique charm.
Thailand has amazed us with its breathtaking nature, diverse cuisine, and the warmth of its people. We discovered secluded beaches, visited impressive temples, explored the underwater world while snorkeling, and fully embraced the country’s diversity.
