Maximum Altitude and Visual Line of Sight
Maximum altitude: According to Vietnamese law, drones must generally follow Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) rules; the exact maximum allowable altitude depends on individual cases and is often regulated by local authorities.
Visual line of sight: The drone must remain visible at all times. Night flights are not permitted without special authorization.

Permit: In Vietnam, a permit must be obtained from the Ministry of Defense before flying, particularly for commercial operations or flights in urban areas.

Our First Trip to Vietnam (April 2023)
In April 2023, we spent two weeks traveling through Vietnam after exploring Cambodia. Our route took us from the island of Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, and Da Nang, before finishing in Hanoi and Sapa.
Phu Quoc offered us relaxing days by the sea before we dived into the bustling city life of Ho Chi Minh City. In central Vietnam, we explored the historic old town of Hoi An and the modern coastal city of Da Nang. The final leg of our journey took us to Hanoi and Sapa, where we were amazed by the stunning rice terraces and mountainous landscapes in the north of the country.

Phu Quoc
Phu Quoc, Vietnam’s largest island, captivates with its tropical beaches, dense jungle, and relaxed atmosphere—perfect for a seaside getaway.

Phu Quoc is easily accessible from Cambodia, with different options depending on your budget and time.

This is the best choice for travelers looking for a convenient and fast journey.

Our Experience
We chose the second option and booked a transfer to Ha Tien through our hotel in Kampot. However, the ride unexpectedly ended at the border, so we had to take a separate taxi to Ha Tien (around $10–20 via PassApp). After passing through Vietnamese immigration, we took a taxi to the ferry terminal ($10), where we exchanged our digital tickets for printed ones. The ferry ride to Phu Quoc took about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Tip
If you choose this option, it’s worth booking the taxi to Ha Tien directly via PassApp to save costs.

During our time on Phu Quoc, we explored various beaches – from lively spots to quiet, untouched coves. Each beach had its own charm and offered a unique atmosphere.

Chaweng Beach
Location:
Sao Beach is located on the southeast coast of Phu Quoc and is one of the island’s most famous beaches.
Our Impression:
With its fine white sand and crystal-clear water, Sao Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on Phu Quoc. The tropical setting invites relaxation, and the shallow water is perfect for swimming.
Since our hotel had a private beach, we decided to visit only Sao Beach during our stay. Despite its popularity, we still found quiet spots to unwind.

Best reached by taxi or scooter.
Lamai Beach
Location:
Lamai Beach is located south of Chaweng on the east coast and is the second-largest beach on Koh Samui.
Our Impression:
Compared to Chaweng Beach, Lamai is a bit quieter and has a more relaxed atmosphere. We found it perfect for escaping the crowds and enjoying a peaceful day. The sand is slightly coarser, but the clear water is just as inviting for swimming.
One of the highlights was the famous Hin Ta and Hin Yai rock formations (Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks), just a short walk from the beach. This unique natural attraction draws many visitors and offers great photo opportunities.
Lamai Beach is ideal for those looking for a balance between relaxation and a touch of activity.
Long Beach
Location:
Located on the west coast of Phu Quoc, Long Beach is the island’s longest and most famous beach.
Our Impression:
Stretching over 20 km, Long Beach features soft, golden sand and stunning sunset views. Along the shoreline, numerous restaurants, bars, and resorts create a lively yet relaxed atmosphere. It’s perfect for long walks or a laid-back day by the sea.
Bai Dai Beach
Location:
In the northwest of the island, near the border with Cambodia.
Our Impression:
Bai Dai Beach captivates with its fine white sand and calm waters. Still largely undeveloped, it offers plenty of space to relax and a stunning natural backdrop.

Our Impression:
As one of the largest Buddhist temples on Phu Quoc, Chua Ho Quoc impresses not only with its architecture but also with its peaceful atmosphere. The expansive complex, adorned with intricate statues, curved roofs, and rich details, invites visitors to explore and relax. The view from the temple terrace is particularly breathtaking – a perfect spot for a moment of tranquility and reflection.
Tip:
Visiting in the early morning offers a truly special experience, as the sun slowly rises over the sea. Additionally, it’s advisable to wear appropriate clothing, as this is a religious site.
Dinh Cau Temple
Location:
Dinh Cau Temple is located on the west coast of Phu Quoc, perched on a rock by the sea, near the Dinh Cau Night Market.
Our Impression:
Though small, Dinh Cau Temple is one of Phu Quoc’s most significant landmarks. Built to honor the guardian deity of fishermen, it offers a unique setting right by the water. A short staircase leads up to the temple, where visitors can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea and the sunset. In the evening, as lanterns light up, the place takes on a magical atmosphere.
Tip:
Visit the temple just before sunset to witness the stunning colors in the sky. As it is a religious site, wearing appropriate clothing is recommended.
Vinpearl Safari Phu Quoc
Location:
Vinpearl Safari is located in the northwest of Phu Quoc and is Vietnam’s first and largest wildlife safari park.
Our Impression:
A must-visit for animal lovers and families! The park offers an exciting mix of zoo and safari, allowing you to see exotic animals up close. The highlight is the safari tour, where you ride in a closed bus through expansive enclosures. In addition to the animals, there are engaging shows and interactive experiences.
Tip:
Arrive early to catch the feeding sessions and shows. Bring a hat and sunscreen, as it can get very hot during the day.
VinWonders Phu Quoc
Location:
VinWonders amusement park is located on the north coast of Phu Quoc and is one of the largest theme parks in Vietnam.
Our Impression:
A paradise for thrill-seekers and families! From thrilling roller coasters and a massive water park to impressive shows – there’s something for everyone. The park is divided into different themed zones, including a fairy tale castle, a pirate world, and a water world with spectacular slides.
Tip:
Plan plenty of time, as there is a lot to explore. It can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended.
Ho-Chi-Minh-City

The market offers a variety of Asian and Indian dishes but is heavily targeted towards tourists – both in atmosphere and pricing. Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet our expectations in terms of taste.
Conclusion:
We were rather disappointed with the market as both the quality and value for money didn’t match up. There are definitely better options on Phu Quoc to enjoy authentic and delicious food.

Our Impression: This colorful temple, built in the late 19th century, is dedicated to the goddess Mariamman and serves as a significant spiritual center for the Tamil community in Vietnam. The intricate decorations, statues of Hindu deities, and the detailed facade make it a unique sight in the city center. Even for non-Hindus, a visit is worthwhile to gain insight into Hindu culture.
Tip: Respect local religious customs and wear appropriate clothing. The temple is especially peaceful and atmospheric in the early morning or late afternoon, making it an ideal time for a visit.
China Town
Location: Chinatown, also known as Chợ Lớn, is located in the western part of Ho Chi Minh City and is the largest Chinese district in Vietnam.
Our Impression: The neighborhood is a vibrant hub of Chinese culture, featuring traditional temples, bustling markets, and authentic Chinese cuisine. While wandering through the narrow streets, you’ll discover historical buildings, small shops, and street vendors selling everything from spices to handmade jewelry. The lively atmosphere and the mix of Vietnamese and Chinese influences make Chinatown an exciting place for explorers.
Tip: Visit the Binh-Tay Market for local specialties and traditional goods. The atmosphere here is especially authentic in the early mornings.
Binh Tay Market in Chinatown
Location: Binh Tay Market is located in the heart of Chinatown in Ho Chi Minh City and is one of the largest and most vibrant markets in the city.

Unfortunately, Thìa Gỗ Restaurant did not fully impress us. The food quality was average, and there are definitely better alternatives in Da Nang for authentic Vietnamese cuisine.

Despite the peaceful atmosphere, there are several resorts and restaurants in the area for added convenience.

Non Nuoc Beach is easily accessible by taxi, motorbike, or bicycle and is only about 15 minutes from Da Nang’s city center.

A highlight is the weekend show, where the dragon breathes fire and water—an unforgettable experience for visitors.
Tip:
Visit the bridge in the evening to enjoy the light show. The best views can be found from nearby cafés or on a boat tour along the Han River.

In the evening, the market comes alive, offering a wide selection of local specialties, snacks, and street food. In addition to culinary delights, you’ll find stalls selling souvenirs, clothing, and handicrafts. Traditional music and dance performances create a vibrant atmosphere, making the market a lively gathering place for both locals and tourists.
Tip:
Visit the market after 8 PM when the atmosphere is at its best. Combine your visit with the Dragon Bridge fire show for the full experience.

Ba Na Hills - Golden Hand Bridge

Ba Na Hills is perched atop a mountain near Da Nang and is easily accessible by taxi or Grab.

This resort area captivates visitors with its French colonial architecture, lush gardens, and breathtaking panoramic views. The cable car ride over the dense rainforest is an experience in itself. On-site, visitors can explore numerous attractions, including theme parks, temples, restaurants, and a hotel. A standout highlight is the Golden Bridge, supported by two massive stone hands, offering a spectacular view. Even in dense fog, Ba Na Hills retains a magical atmosphere.
Tip:
Visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds. Bring a light jacket, as temperatures on the mountain can be noticeably cooler.

A wonderful opportunity to experience Hoi An’s famous lantern art up close! In the “Full Class” workshop (about 2.5 – 3 hours), you build your lantern from scratch. For those with less time, the “Express Class” (about 1.5 hours) is available, where a pre-made frame is provided, and you simply attach the silk. A creative and relaxing experience that also results in a fantastic souvenir.
Tip:
Make sure to allocate enough time to craft your lantern at a relaxed pace. Workshops are available from 8:30 AM to 10:00 PM, and participation costs about 14 €.

Our impression: Fansipan, Vietnam’s highest mountain, offers breathtaking views and an unforgettable experience. The cable car ride takes you to the summit in just a few minutes, offering spectacular panoramas of the Sa Pa mountain landscape. At the top, you’ll find impressive temple structures, statues, and a small train that takes you even closer to the highest point.
Tip: Book your ticket in advance through Klook or directly at the station. If you prefer to hike, make sure to allocate enough time—it’s a challenging but rewarding journey.
Arriving at the Muong Hoa Station, we continued our journey to Fansipan by cable car, which took about 20 minutes.
Upon arriving at Fansipan, it was quite cool, so I recommend bringing a sweater or something similar. The path from the cable car exit to the outside passes through an art gallery and some restaurants. The climb up was a bit strenuous, as it consists of many stairs. Along the way, there are a few restroom facilities and about 1-2 restaurants. You’ll also pass by a couple of small temples, which we visited as well.
From the top, in my opinion, you’ll have the best view and the most stunning perspective of the area.
Visiting the Rice Fields
Since the tours to the rice fields weren’t highly rated and we specifically chose a hotel surrounded by rice fields, we only visited the rice fields around our hotel. We highly recommend selecting a hotel in Sa Pa that is situated between the rice fields for a truly special stay. However, if you choose a more central accommodation in the Sa Pa town center, we would suggest exploring the rice fields on your own or booking a tour.

Hanoi, the vibrant capital of Vietnam, uniquely blends tradition and modernity. The city is easily accessible by plane, train, or bus and is often the starting point for trips to the north.
In the Old Quarter, you’ll find narrow alleys, historic temples, and the famous Water Puppet Theatre. Hoan Kiem Lake is the heart of the city and a popular meeting place for both locals and tourists.
