San Gimignano

My final stop of the trip: a medieval town in Tuscany, known for its striking towers, the view over the vineyards and multiple-award-winning gelato.

Getting to San Gimignano

Independent arrival by car from Amalfi, about 5 hours, along the Amalfi Coast, past Naples and through the picturesque landscapes of Tuscany. Alternatives: train and bus with several changes (e.g. via Florence or Siena), takes considerably longer. Or a flight to Florence followed by a rental car or public transport. Important note: San Gimignano is car-free, vehicles must be parked in the signposted lots outside the town walls, from there it's a walk into the historic center.

Where We Stayed in San Gimignano

I' Quercecchio, Relax tra le torri

Central location, ideal for exploring the surroundings comfortably on foot, perfect for spontaneous bookings and flexible arrivals. €100 a night, good value for money. Central location with quick access to all major sights, easy spontaneous booking, key handover via a lockbox ideal for late arrivals, sauna in the apartment. Downside: the bathroom is a bit dated.

Verdict: A well-located place to stay with a practical self-check-in option and a special wellness extra, perfect for spontaneous travelers who appreciate comfort and relaxation.

The Best Food in San Gimignano

Le Vecchie Mura

Beautifully located with a dreamy view over the Tuscan hills, a charming restaurant with traditional Tuscan cuisine and a lovely terrace, authentic, lovingly prepared dishes.

Verdict: A wonderful place to enjoy regional specialties while letting your gaze wander over the picturesque landscape.

Gelateria Dondoli

Right in the historic center, one of Italy's best-known gelaterias, multiple award winner (2006 world champion in the "ice cream" category at the Gelato World Tour). An impressive range of creative flavors, especially the saffron or Vernaccia wine specialties are a highlight.

Verdict: A must for every visit to San Gimignano, excellent gelato, friendly service and an unmatched taste experience.

The Best Activities in San Gimignano

Farmers' Market

In the heart of San Gimignano, an authentic atmosphere in the middle of the historic old town. A large selection of fresh, regional products from fruit and vegetables to cheese, olive oil and local specialties, with the chance to talk directly with the producers. Usually opens between 7 and 8am, closes around noon.

Verdict: A must for anyone who values fresh, local produce and wants to experience the Tuscan flair in an authentic setting.

Farmers' Market

Olive Oil Farm, Mascagni Organic Farm

Idyllically set in the Tuscan countryside, about 1.5 hours by car from San Gimignano. A warm welcome from the team, a spontaneous olive oil tasting with different varieties and plenty of knowledge about the cultivation, processing and quality of olive oil. The drive there is along a longer gravel road.

Verdict: A wonderful place for anyone interested in high-quality, organic olive oil production, a real insider tip.
