Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is Cambodia's vibrant capital and also its largest city, located at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Sap and Bassac rivers. Its history goes back to the 14th century, and though founded as a small settlement, it was for centuries an important trading and cultural center and served as the capital of the Khmer Empire.

Getting to Phnom Penh

Bus: departures between 12:30am and 11:55pm, journey takes about 5.5 hours, cost between €10 and €17 per person. Taxi: also around 5.5 hours, from €80. We chose the minibus, affordable and comfortable, perfect for an uncomplicated onward journey. Important: you have to show the bus company staff your digital ticket on your phone to get a regular ticket, the process is simple and well organized.

Where We Stayed in Phnom Penh

Baitong Hotel & Resort Phnom Penh

Centrally located with an ideal base for exploring, from €65 a night including breakfast. Beautiful, distinctive atmosphere with a great jungle pool, plus the convenient nearness of a small supermarket. Minor downsides: breakfast wasn't very varied, and there were no lactose-free or plant-based milk alternatives.

Verdict: despite the breakfast limitations, we'd recommend the Baitong Hotel & Resort, the impressive facilities and pleasant atmosphere won us over.

Night Market

Unfortunately only a few vegetarian dishes, but we did discover the coconut ice cream, a delicious refreshment and absolutely worth trying.
