Tulum

Known for the Maya ruins perched right above a cliff by the sea, plus countless cenotes in the surrounding area, good bike paths and an alternative, boho-inspired beach scene.

Where We Stayed in Tulum

Keej by NIIK Tulum

A bit outside the center, ideal with a rental car (from about €70/night). I loved the modern rooms, the quiet location and the beautiful pool area, though without a car you're dependent on rides into the center.

Anyone who wants to stay more central will find cheaper alternatives in Tulum Pueblo, closer to restaurants and cenotes.

The Best Beaches in Tulum

Playa Paraíso

With fine white sand and turquoise, gently sloping water, this ranks among the most beautiful beaches in the region, with numerous beach clubs.

Playa Paraíso

Playa Ruinas

Right below the Maya ruins, one of the most photogenic beaches in Mexico – best visited early morning before it gets crowded.

Playa Ruinas

Las Palmas Beach

For a quieter day, this beach south of Playa Paraíso is worth it, with plenty of space and no big beach clubs.

The Best Food in Tulum

Antojitos La Chiapaneca

I kept coming back here for cheap, authentic tacos al pastor, with fresh homemade salsas.

Restaurante Estrada

Impresses with fresh fish, seafood and good vegetarian options in a relaxed atmosphere.

Raw Love Beach Tulum

For smoothie bowls and healthy snacks in the hotel zone, a lovely but pricey option (2 bowls + drink approx. €39) – cash only here, so plan accordingly.

The Best Activities in Tulum

Tulum ruins

A bike ride to the Tulum ruins right above the sea was one of the highlights of the whole trip for me (admission 57 MXN) – best early morning, to explore the site in peace and then cool off on the beach below.

Cenotes around Tulum

The area is full of cenotes for swimming and snorkeling, such as Gran Cenote, Cenote Aldea Zama or Cenote Calavera (admission approx. 250 MXN).

Tip: agree on taxi prices for cenote tours in advance, once I was charged more than double the price at my destination despite having arranged it through my hotel beforehand.

SFER IK Art Museum & Ven a la Luz

The SFER IK Art Museum and the wooden sculpture "Ven a la Luz" by Daniel Popper are also worth a detour.
