The Best Activities in Tairua

Pumpkin Hill Lookout / Mount Paku

On the way from Whangamata toward Tairua we stopped at Pumpkin Hill Lookout, a small but worthwhile viewpoint right on the road (State Highway 25). From here a beautiful view of the coast and the sea, and on clear days as far as the Pauanui Peninsula. A small parking lot and signposted viewpoint right beside it, perfect for a quick break on the road, no big hike or entry fee needed.

Te Karo Bay

A bit outside Tairua, a quiet, secluded bay with pale sand and clear water. The narrow access road is easy to drive, with parking right on the beach. A relaxed stopover, quietly located and ideal for a short break by the sea.

Hot Water Beach

A truly unique natural wonder: here you can dig your own hot pool right on the beach. The beach sits above a geothermal area where hot water from underground springs rises to the surface at certain spots and mixes with the cooler seawater. The phenomenon mainly occurs at low tide. A shovel can be rented from the café on site for around 5 to 10 NZD, which you use to dig a hole in the sand that fills with hot water, in some spots almost like a natural jacuzzi.
