Where We Stayed in Taupo

Great Lake Holiday Park

40 NZD for 2 people/night. Quiet location, surrounded by nature, generous, level sites, clean, modern sanitary facilities, well-equipped camp kitchen, well-kept grounds. Downside: a bit outside Taupō, maybe too remote for some.

Verdict: A perfect mix of peace and proximity to town, sanitary facilities and camp kitchen are modern and well-equipped, a recommendable choice.

The Best Activities in Taupo

Tongariro Alpine Crossing

One of New Zealand's best-known day hikes: 19.4 kilometers through Tongariro National Park, past volcanoes, crater lakes and lava fields. Taupo is a good starting or finishing point for the hike.

The hike is considered demanding, with varied terrain including volcanic ground, snow, meadow and rocky sections. So good hiking boots with solid grip and a backpack with water, snacks, weatherproof clothing and sun protection are important.

The weather can change quickly, so you should be prepared for changing conditions. Anyone planning the hike should also start early, since the trail can be challenging. We booked the transfer to the trailhead as well as the transport from the end of the trail back down to the valley directly through our campsite, a convenient way to enjoy the hike without extra logistics.

Huka Falls

About a 10 to 15 minute walk from the parking lot, an impressive natural wonder. The Waikato River plunges here with enormous force through a narrow gorge, creating brilliant turquoise water. The path is well built and easy to walk. Free entry.

Wai-O-Tapu

A geothermal park a short drive from Rotorua, known for its fascinating geothermal phenomena: hot springs, mud pools and steaming fumaroles. Especially striking are the colorful hot springs in bright shades of green, yellow and turquoise. Along the well-signposted trails we discovered spots like the Champagne Pool and the Lady Knox Geyser, which erupts at the same time every day. Entry 12 NZD per person.

Verdict: A place you have to see if you're in the area, it feels almost like being on another planet.

Bathing in a hot spring: "Hot'n'Cold"

A natural thermal pool right on a river. You can relax in a hot spring pool and then cool off in the cold river, the perfect switch between warm and cold. The spot is completely public and free to access, and the setting deep in nature makes for a relaxed atmosphere.

Verdict: The perfect spot to recover after a day full of hiking, and without any entry cost.
