Getting to Waiheke Island

By Fullers360 ferry, around 25–30 NZD per person (one way), taking around 35–40 minutes from the ferry terminal in the heart of Auckland. At Matiatia Wharf, the main ferry landing, public buses are already waiting, which comfortably reach many spots on the island.

Where We Stayed on Waiheke Island

Waiheke Backpackers Hostel

Quietly located but still well connected, with very good value for money for a hostel on Waiheke. Very calm and pleasant atmosphere, well-kept grounds with lovely green surroundings, friendly staff, uncomplicated check-in, well-equipped shared kitchen, bus stop nearby. Downside: rooms are simple, and a bit noisy depending on location.

Verdict: A genuinely pleasant stay in a quiet and charming hostel, we'd come back any time.

The Best Beaches on Waiheke Island

Palm Beach

On the sheltered east coast, about a 10-minute drive from the main town of Oneroa, easy to reach with parking and a bus stop. A long, golden sandy beach with calm water, ideal for swimming and sunbathing, well-kept surroundings with public toilets and shaded picnic tables. Also great for families.

Verdict: The perfect spot to simply catch your breath and enjoy Waiheke's relaxed atmosphere.

Palm Beach

Little Palm Beach

Right next to Palm Beach, reachable via a short footpath from the southern end of the main beach. Noticeably smaller and more secluded, surrounded by lush greenery, a very private atmosphere with far fewer people.

Verdict: A real insider tip for those seeking peace and quiet.

The Best Activities on Waiheke Island

Hike to Pinnacle Hill

In the center of the island, with a fantastic panoramic view of the island and the sea. Starts at the lookout point of the Te Ara Hura Trail, around 4 km long, takes roughly 1.5 hours depending on pace, no entry fees. The trail winds through varied landscape with wooded stretches and open, grassy areas, the climb is moderate, sturdy footwear is a plus.

Verdict: The summit rewards you with a spectacular 360-degree view over Waiheke Island, the turquoise water and the surrounding islands.

Hike to Pinnacle Hill

Wine walk

Starts near Oneroa and winds through the island's idyllic vineyards, around 2–3 hours depending on pace and stops at the wineries. Along the way there's the chance to visit various wineries and try the famous Waiheke wine, all with views of the sea and the island.
