Tanzania (including Zanzibar) allows drone flights in principle, but requires prior registration and approval from the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA) – considerably more involved than in many other destinations.
Under the Civil Aviation (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) Regulations, RPAS/drones may only be imported, registered and operated with prior TCAA approval – this also applies to tourists with private camera drones.
Applications are handled online through the TCAA portal. Initial inquiries go by email to drones@tcaa.go.tz, after which you receive access credentials for the system. For non-residents, TCAA processing takes 3–4 weeks, so apply well ahead of your trip.
Flying is only permitted within the approved conditions: keeping distance from airports and sensitive areas, respecting altitude limits, and generally no night flights without separate permission.
Drone use is strictly prohibited for regular tourists in Tanzanian national parks; TANAPA only grants exceptions for professional filming, documentaries or scientific purposes.
