Mahé

Mahé, the largest island of the Seychelles, is the perfect introduction for anyone wanting to experience breathtaking beaches, impressive nature and Creole island life. Lush green mountains, turquoise water and white sand beaches: Mahé combines everything that makes the Seychelles so special. Alongside well-known beaches like Beau Vallon and Anse Intendance, countless hiking trails wind through the tropical Morne Seychellois National Park, while the capital Victoria charms with colorful markets, colonial architecture and plenty of Creole flair.

Getting to Mahé

We flew with Emirates from Frankfurt, with a stopover in Dubai: the first leg took about 6 hours, and after a short break it was another 4.5 hours to Mahé. We spent five nights on Mahé at the start of the trip, plus one final night before our flight home. We had a rental car for three days (about €30/day, some narrow and winding but well-maintained roads); alternatively, the 4-day bus ticket from the bus station in Victoria is worth it (about €12, unlimited rides, though schedules are irregular and service ends early).

Only really accessible by car, but the stylish ambiance won us over instantly. Shared kitchen, living room, pool table and a lovely pool area to linger in: exactly the kind of place that invites you to relax together.

The road up is steep, but the special charm more than makes up for it. If you have a car and value stylish shared spaces, you'll feel right at home here.

The Best Beaches on Mahé

Anse Major

Reachable only on foot or by boat, on the remote northwest coast. The hike starts in Bel Ombre, runs through Morne Seychellois National Park and takes about 45 minutes (entry: 100 SCR, card payment only). The path winds through shady takamaka trees before opening again and again onto breathtaking views of the turquoise sea.

We were rewarded with an idyllic bay: fine, golden sand, imposing granite rocks, crystal-clear water for swimming and snorkeling. Instead of hiking back, we chose a 15-minute boat ride back to Beau Vallon, another wonderful view of the coastline.

The combination of hike and boat ride made Anse Major one of our absolute favorites on Mahé: a little adventure away from the crowds that you shouldn't miss.

Anse Major

Beau Vallon Beach

One of the best-known and liveliest beaches in the Seychelles, on the northwest coast. Long, wide sandy beach, fine golden sand, clear water, and along the promenade plenty of restaurants and bars with fresh seafood and Creole specialties.

We spent an evening here at a beach bar, drinking cocktails and playing Uno as the sun slowly set, one of the best memories of the whole trip.

Perfect for anyone looking for a lively beach atmosphere with restaurants and bars. For more peace and quiet, Mahé also has more secluded alternatives.

Beau Vallon Beach

Anse Takamaka Beach

A picturesque setting on the southwest coast, turquoise water, striking granite rocks. Not overrun, despite its beauty. The sea can get choppy depending on the season, so take some care when swimming. A small restaurant right on the beach was the perfect spot for a relaxed lunch with Creole food.

Ideal for anyone looking for an idyllic beach without the crowds, one of our favorites on Mahé.

Anse Takamaka Beach

Anse Gouvernement

Fine white sand, turquoise water, gently curving bays, surrounded by several hotels but never crowded. Palm trees offer shade while the view stretches across the open sea to the surrounding islands.

A perfect balance of comfort and natural beauty, ideal for a relaxing beach day.

Anse Gouvernement

Anse Intendance

A long, unspoiled sandy beach on the south coast with an impressive panorama. Fine white sand, picturesque granite rocks, but without a protective reef the waves can pack quite a punch depending on the season.

Anyone who loves untouched nature and spectacular scenery will love Anse Intendance, the perfect place to experience the Seychelles away from the big crowds.

Hearty dishes to go, we tried the vegetarian fried rice and were happy with it. At the attached fruit stand there was fresh tropical fruit for in between.

A wide selection from pastries to hot meals. On our visit the food didn't quite win us over, but the menu invites a second chance.

The combination of history, local culture and quality rum really won us over, the tasting in particular was a highlight, plus delicious food from the food truck.

A must for anyone who wants to learn more about Seychellois rum while enjoying a relaxed afternoon.

Botanical Garden in Victoria

Near the city center, about 100 SCR entry. Huge Coco de Mer palms, exotic plants and free-roaming giant tortoises. Perfect for a relaxed break from the beach.

Sunset at Mission Lodge viewpoint

In western Mahé on the Sans Souci Road, free entry. A historic site with ruins of an old mission school and one of the island's most beautiful viewpoints, especially magical at sunset.
