In August 2023, we drove from Frankfurt to Italy by car to explore the country for 2 weeks.

We decided to start in Florence, then continue to Tuscany, Hot Springs, Rome, Alberobello, Tropea, the Amalfi Coast, and spend the final night in San Gimignano.

Florenz

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is located in the central region of Italy. It stretches along the Arno River and is surrounded by hills, enclosing the city in a picturesque valley. The city has a long and rich history as one of the cultural centers of Europe, particularly during the Renaissance.


Arrival in Florenc

Our journey to Florence started early in the morning directly from Frankfurt. While the car ride was long, after 10 hours we finally reached our destination.

Location: The accommodation was located in a suburb of Florence, away from the city center, contributing to a quiet atmosphere. One could either walk to the center of Florence in about 30-40 minutes, ride a bike for 15 minutes, or use the local train to quickly reach the main train station.

Value for Money: The value for money is good.

Positives: A beautiful ambiance, quiet and spacious apartment, complimentary bicycles available, parking space.

Viewpoint - Piazzale Michelangelo


Piazzale Michelangelo is a famous viewpoint in Florence that offers breathtaking views of the city. It is located on a hill on the southern bank of the Arno River and is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike.

Florence Central Market


The Central Market of Florence, also known as "Mercato Centrale" or "Mercato di San Lorenzo," is a lively and cultural hub in the historic center of Florence. This historical market spans two floors and offers an abundance of culinary experiences.

On the ground floor, you'll find fresh produce such as fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, and cheeses offered by local vendors. It's a great place to purchase fresh ingredients for your Tuscan cooking adventures.

However, the highlight of Mercato Centrale is the first floor, which serves as a "Food Court." Here, you'll find a variety of stalls and restaurants offering a wide range of Tuscan specialties and international cuisine. From pizza and pasta to paninis and fresh gelato, there's something here to please every palate.

The market is not just a place to eat but also a place to experience the local culture and culinary heritage of Florence. It's the perfect spot to taste traditional dishes and soak in the vibrant atmosphere of this historic market.

Florence Cathedral


The Florence Cathedral, also known as the Florence Duomo or Santa Maria del Fiore, is the largest religious building in Florence and the city's most distinctive architectural landmark. Designed by Filippo Brunelleschi, the impressive dome captivates visitors with its sublime grandeur and symbolizes the cultural and religious significance of the city. With its imposing exterior and intricate details inside, the cathedral draws people from around the world and embodies Florence's rich heritage.

Baptisterium San Giovanni (Battistero di San Giovanni)


Das Baptisterium San Giovanni, oder auf Italienisch "Battistero di San Giovanni", ist eines der bedeutendsten historischen Gebäude in Florenz, Italien. Dieses beeindruckende Baptisterium ist dem Heiligen Johannes dem Täufer gewidmet und gehört zum Domkomplex von Florenz, der auch den berühmten Dom von Florenz (Santa Maria del Fiore) und den Campanile (Glockenturm) umfasst.

Ponte Vecchio


The Ponte Vecchio is a famous bridge in Florence, Italy, spanning the Arno River. This iconic bridge is particularly renowned for its unique architecture, as it is lined with small shops tightly packed together.

The Ponte Vecchio is one of the oldest bridges in Florence and has undergone various forms over the centuries, but its present structure mainly dates back to the 14th century. During World War II, the bridge was spared from destruction, remaining one of the few bridges in Florence intact.

The small shops on the Ponte Vecchio traditionally house jewelry stores and goldsmiths, selling a wide range of jewelry and precious stones. The bridge also has a rich history, once serving as the location for butchers and tanneries until Cosimo I de' Medici in the 16th century ordered these establishments removed due to the unpleasant odors.

Piazza della Repubblica, Florence


The Piazza della Repubblica is a central square in Florence, Italy, embodying a rich history and vibrant urban life. Situated in the heart of the city, this square has undergone many changes over the centuries.

Originally, the Piazza della Repubblica served as the center of ancient Roman Florence and was used as a forum. Over the centuries, the shape of the square has changed several times until it finally became what it is today during the 19th century, during the time of the Kingdom of Italy.

Surrounded by elegant buildings and cafés, the Piazza della Repubblica is a popular spot for strolling, relaxing, and people-watching. The square is adorned with the impressive triumphal arch, which commemorates the unification of Italy.

This square is a lively meeting point for locals and tourists alike. Here, you'll find street performers, musicians, and storytellers adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the square.

Negatives: No Wi-Fi, limited cell phone reception, no air conditioning (only 2 fans, which may not be sufficient during the hot summer temperatures in Italy). These negative aspects may have improved since the apartment has only been rented since July 2023.

Negative: The air conditioning in our room was broken, and despite informing them, we were not notified about it. Instead, we were provided with a small fan, which didn't offer much relief in the hot summer temperatures. Another negative point was the high price.

Within just 3-5 minutes' walk, you can reach the nearest bus stop, from where you can easily reach the various towns along the Amalfi Coast. This makes exploring the picturesque coastal region convenient, making the location of the accommodation extremely practical.

Value for Money: Good.

Positive: The accommodation stood out for its modern and tasteful decor, creating an extremely pleasant atmosphere. But what really made it special was the private terrace in each apartment. Here, you could relax in a hot tub and enjoy the sun on comfortable seating. The hosts were exceptionally friendly and always available to assist. The best part was that parking was included in the overnight rate and located directly on the premises of the accommodation. This allowed us to relax and not worry about the secure storage of our vehicle.

Sorrent



Sorrento is a picturesque coastal town in southern Italy located along the famous Amalfi Coast in the Campania region. The town is renowned for its stunning location perched high on cliffs overlooking the azure Tyrrhenian Sea. The region is known for its lemon production, and Sorrento Limoncello, a lemon liqueur, is a popular souvenir for visitors.

In Sorrento, you'll also find numerous churches and historical landmarks, including the Sorrento Cathedral and Piazza Tasso. The city has a rich culinary tradition, and visitors can sample delicious Neapolitan cuisine at local restaurants. Sorrento is a popular destination for those seeking a relaxed, picturesque environment and the beauty of the Amalfi Coast.

Positano


Positano, a picturesque coastal village on the Amalfi Coast in southern Italy, is characterized by its colorful terrace houses perched on steep cliffs overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking views, explore winding alleyways, and experience the beautiful beaches. The town also offers cultural treasures and culinary delights, including fresh seafood and Limoncello. Positano is a romantic paradise and a popular destination for those looking to experience the beauty of the Amalfi Coast.

Getting to Positano

We took a bus to the ferry port in Amalfi. The bus stop was only about a 3-5 minute walk from our accommodation.

The ride there was very winding, and after about 45 minutes, we arrived at the port in Amalfi. From there, we took a ferry to Positano. We purchased the tickets online.

Return trip: We bought the tickets back to Amalfi at the ferry port, as it was no longer possible to purchase them online.

Note: You cannot buy bus tickets on the bus. Tickets can be purchased in the respective towns along the Amalfi Coast, at selected kiosks, cafes, or online via an app. Unfortunately, buying tickets through the app didn't work for us, so we had to quickly run to a cafe to purchase the tickets.

Amalfi


Amalfi, a charming town on the Amalfi Coast in Italy, is renowned for its unique beauty. It is famous for its historical architecture and stunning location nestled between steep cliffs and the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea. Visitors can explore the impressive Cathedral of Amalfi and stroll through the charming alleys lined with traditional shops and restaurants. The inviting beaches offer relaxation and refreshment, while the region boasts delicious seafood and lemon products.

On the way to San Gimignano, we visited an olive oil farm - Mascagni Organicfarm.

We chose this farm because it had excellent reviews on Google and was conveniently located on our way to San Gimignano. Upon our arrival, we were greeted very warmly by a staff member. They spontaneously offered us a small olive oil tasting and provided comprehensive information about the farm, olive cultivation, oil processing, and how to recognize high-quality olive oil.


Directions:

The approach to the farm was via a long gravel road that resembled more of a dirt track.

San Gimignano

Positive: The central location of the apartment is really great. We were able to book our accommodation spontaneously, which was really convenient. Access to the apartment was very practical as we could use a key box where the apartment key was securely stored. This made our late and spontaneous stay much easier as we didn't have to worry about key handover. The apartment even had a sauna, which was a nice extra. This allowed for relaxing wellness moments after a busy day and contributed to our relaxation.

Negative: The bathroom in the apartment could use a renovation. It seemed a bit outdated and showed signs of wear and tear.

The Gelateria Dondoli in San Gimignano, Italy, is renowned for its delicious gelato and numerous international awards. In 2006, Gelato Dondoli, owned and operated by Sergio Dondoli, was crowned the world champion in the "gelato" category at the Gelato World Tour. This prestigious title recognizes the exceptional quality and flavor of their gelato, making Gelateria Dondoli a popular destination for tourists and gelato enthusiasts from around the world.

Farmers' Market


The farmers' market in San Gimignano usually starts in the morning. The exact time may vary, but typically markets in Italy open between 7:00 and 8:00 in the morning and last until noon.

Tower Visit: Explore the famous medieval towers of San Gimignano. Some can be climbed, including the Torre Grossa, offering great views of the city and the surrounding countryside.

On the way back, we made a stopover in Parma

Parma, a city in the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, is nestled beautifully on the banks of the Parma River. The city is renowned for its rich history, art, and culinary delights. Parma is famous for Parmesan cheese and Parma ham, and it boasts stunning architectural treasures such as Parma Cathedral and the Teatro Farnese. Surrounded by green hills and gentle landscapes, Parma is a place where history, culture, and gastronomy harmoniously blend together.

During our return journey, we made a stopover in Parma to visit a local cheese factory and replenish our supply of delicious Parmesan for Germany. In advance, we had searched for a cheese factory and eventually settled on this one. In addition to Parmesan, the shop offered a selection of other regional products such as pesto and olive oil. Please note, if you plan to make a stop at a cheese factory in this area, be mindful of the opening hours and lunch breaks, as most cheese factories are only open for limited hours per day and close during lunchtime. This allows you to plan your visit accordingly and experience the authentic flavors of this region.
