Phu Quoc - Ho Chi Minh - Da Nang - Sapa - Hanoi

In April 2023, we were finally able to cross another destination off our bucket list and embarked on an unforgettable trip to Vietnam.

Together with my partner, we spent a total of 2 weeks traveling from Cambodia to Phu Quoc, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Sa Pa, and Hanoi.

We made the most of our vacation and explored as much of Vietnam's beauty as possible. We opted for an itinerary that took us from the white sandy beaches of Phu Quoc to the historically significant cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

In this blog, I'll take you along on our adventures in Vietnam and share our experiences and recommendations for each destination. Let's start with our first stop in Phu Quoc:

Currency: Vietnamese Dong

Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is an island in the Kien Giang Province of Vietnam, situated in the Gulf of Thailand near the Cambodian border. It spans approximately 50 km in length and 25 km in width, covering an area of around 574 km². Phu Quoc is renowned for its beautiful beaches, coral reefs, and tropical rainforests. It's a popular destination for tourists seeking relaxation and rejuvenation, as well as adventurers eager to snorkel, dive, or embark on trekking tours.

Arrival from Cambodia-Kampot to Phu Quoc

How to get there:

The island is easily accessible from Cambodia with various options available.

1.Option Bus from Kampot to Phnom Penh + Flight

Bus Duration: 3-4 hours

Flight Duration: 4 hours and 30 minutes (including layover in Ho Chi Minh)

Bus Cost: From €8

Flight Cost: From €80 including checked baggage

Bus Provider: Via 12asiatogo

2.Option Taxi + Ferry from Kampot

This option is the quickest and simplest.

Duration: Approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes

Cost: From €30 per person

Taxi Provider: Via PassApp

Ferry Provider: Via 12asiatogo

We had booked a transfer to Ha Tien in Vietnam through our hotel in Kampot. Unfortunately, the journey only ended at the border to Vietnam and not in Ha Tien as advertised. Had we known this in advance, we would have booked a taxi through PassApp, which would have cost only about 10-20€, compared to the 40€ for the incomplete transfer. At the border, we got off and first went to the Cambodian authorities to get stamped out. Then, we walked across the border to the Vietnamese authorities to get stamped in. Finally, at the border control in Vietnam, we took a taxi to the ferry terminal for $10, which took only about 10 minutes. Upon arrival, we went to the ferry provider's counter, showed our digital ticket on our phone, and received the regular printed ticket. The ferry ride lasted a total of 1 hour and 15 minutes.

We chose the 2nd option because of the distance.

Accommodation on Phu Quoc

Salinda Resort Phu Quoc Island

Location: The beachfront location is fantastic.

Cost: Starting at €90 per night.

The room's decor was tasteful and unique, with a particular highlight being the extraordinary bathroom. The resort itself is beautiful, and the breakfast was impressive with its variety and delicious options. We were also delighted by the good selection for vegetarians and vegans. In the breakfast room, we found a schedule with the various events offered at the resort. Enjoying stand-up paddling and kayaking equipment free of charge was another highlight, and on some days, outdoor yoga classes were available. The resort boasts a modern fitness center and a small yet charming garden. The pool overlooking the beach was a true highlight, and the impressive art exhibition rounded off our experience perfectly.

Negative: None.

Conclusion: We can wholeheartedly recommend the Salinda Resort on Phu Quoc and would return without hesitation.

Ba Na Hills is a recreational area situated on a mountaintop near Da Nang, Vietnam. It offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape and is renowned for its cooler temperatures and French colonial architecture. Visitors can enjoy a cable car ride over the dense rainforest to reach the recreation area. Once there, numerous activities await, including theme parks, indoor and outdoor play areas, gardens, temples, restaurants, and even a hotel. One of the most prominent features of Ba Na Hills is the Golden Bridge, a stunning bridge supported by two giant stone hands, providing a unique view of the surrounding scenery.

The Golden Bridge in Vietnam, also known as "Cầu Vàng," is a popular tourist attraction near the city of Da Nang. Opened in 2018, the bridge is notable for its unconventional architecture and the two hands supporting it. The hands are covered in a layer of gold color, giving the bridge its distinctive appearance. The bridge also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. It's undoubtedly a destination to visit when exploring the Da Nang region.

When we decided to visit Ba Na Hills, we were filled with anticipation and curiosity about what awaited us. However, upon arrival, we unfortunately realized that the weather wasn't entirely in our favor. The dense fog that prevailed that day made it challenging to fully grasp the breathtaking beauty of the landscape. We could only imagine the magnificent views that would have been available to us. Nonetheless, the unique atmosphere surrounding Ba Na Hills couldn't be denied, and we still enjoyed our visit to the fullest.

My Course: Lantern Shop / Lantern Making Classes

Opening Hours: 8:30am - 10pm

I participated in the "Full Class" workshop, which lasted about 2.5 - 3 hours. There's also an option for the "Express Class," which takes around 1.5 hours and provides you with a pre-made lantern frame (third image) to which you attach the chosen silk. Depending on your available time and how much hands-on work you want to do, you can choose between the two classes.

Coconut Basket Boat Tour

Providers: TripAdvisor, Klook, Viator, GetYourGuide

Cost: Starting from €4 per person.

Conclusion: The coconut basket boat tour in Hoi An was an overall enjoyable and interesting experience. However, it's important to note that it's a typical tourist attraction. During the tour, several stops are made, such as at a small stage where someone plays music and encourages people on the boats to come closer. The boat drivers then navigate towards the stage, giving tourists the opportunity to give money. While the whole experience was quite amusing for €4, we found the multiple stops and the associated repeated requests for tips a bit bothersome.

Boat Trip in Hoi An

Experience the charm of Hoi An during an evening boat trip. Immerse yourself in the romantic atmosphere as the lanterns illuminate the river with their magical light. Enjoy the tranquility as you glide along the canals, admiring the historical buildings reflected in the water.

Providers: Klook, On-site, and more.

Cost: Starting from €4 for 2 persons.

Conclusion: The boat trip was a delightful experience and I highly recommend it to eve

Laxsik Ecolodge

Location: The hotel is situated slightly outside the city, so transportation is needed to reach the city center. However, its unique location surrounded by rice fields is perfect for relaxation.

Cost: Starting from 80€ per night.

Value for Money: Good

Positive: The hotel offers a unique atmosphere as it's surrounded by rice fields and provides breathtaking views. The accommodation was impressive with its unique and beautiful decor.

The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating, and the breakfast was delicious.

Negative: The only drawback was that the hotel was a bit far from the city center, which meant relying on taxis for transportation. It would have been helpful if there were labels for the various dishes during breakfast, as it wasn't always clear what type of dish it was and whether it was vegetarian.

Conclusion: Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Laxsik Ecolodge and highly recommend the accommodation.

Laxsik Ecolodge

Things to do in Sapa

Fansipan

Fansipan is the highest mountain in Vietnam, reaching an elevation of 3,143 meters, and is located in the Lào Cai Province near the town of Sa Pa. Fansipan is a well-known tourist destination, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. There are several ways to reach the summit, including a challenging two-day hike or a cable car ride. Fansipan is also renowned for its diverse flora and fauna, making it a popular spot for trekking and climbing tours.

The Fansipan Cable Car in Sapa, Vietnam, was, at the time of its opening in 2016, the world's longest three-rope cable car system with a length of 6.2 km. However, in 2021, it was surpassed by the new Genting SkyWorlds cable car in Malaysia with a length of 3.4 km. Nevertheless, the Fansipan Cable Car remains the longest cable car in Southeast Asia and offers spectacular views of the surrounding landscape.

Sapa Station - Ga Tàu Leo Núi

Here you can purchase the train tickets for Fansipan, either directly at the station or, as we did, through platforms like Klook. You have the flexibility to customize your ticket options, such as train + cable car, cable car only, or additional rides from Fansipan to the highest point or back down.

We opted for the "Fansipan Cable Car and Muong Hoa Monorail Ticket," which includes the train ride from Sapa Station - Ga Tàu Leo Núi to the Muong Hoa Station, from where the cable car takes you to Fansipan.

Tickets online

Arrived at Muong Hoa Station, we took the gondola to Fansipan from here, the journey took about 20 minutes.

Arriving at Fansipan, it was naturally a bit chilly there, so I recommend bringing a sweater or something similar. The path from the cable car exit to the outside leads through a picture gallery and dining areas. The way up was a bit strenuous as it consists of many stairs. Along the way, there are some restroom facilities and about 1-2 dining places. You'll also pass by a few small temples, which we also visited.

From the top, in my opinion, you have the most beautiful view and a panoramic view of the surroundings.

Visiting Rice Fields

Since the tours to the rice fields were not well-rated and we specifically chose a hotel surrounded by rice fields, we only explored the rice fields around our hotel. We can highly recommend choosing a hotel located amidst the rice fields in Sa Pa for a truly unique experience. However, if you opt for a more central accommodation in the Sa Pa town center, we would suggest exploring the rice fields on your own or booking a tour to do so.
