In 2021 we were on Santorini, where we were particularly enthusiastic about the Greek flair with its charming architecture, but we missed the green nature on Santorini.
For this reason we decided in 2022 for the beautiful green island of Zakynthos and its picturesque bays, the crystal clear water and the beautiful beaches.
Zakynthos is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea.
The capital of Zakynthos is Zakynthos(town).
The island is also a breeding ground for the endangered turtle species "Caretta Caretta".
We started from Frankfurt by direct flight to Zakynthos. The return flight with the airline "Condor" cost us €400 per person with luggage.
House of the Sea
Location: The hotel is centrally located in the town of Laganes.
Costs: around €100 per night
Value for money: good
Pros: The room was nice and modern. Each room had a small patio or balcony. Free parking was available in front of the hotel and the beach was only a 2 minute walk away.
Cons: Breakfast was included and served at a beachfront restaurant a 2 minute walk from the hotel. Unfortunately the breakfast was very basic and consisted only of coffee, juice, two slices of toast, cheese, ham, butter and jam. There were no menu choices or buffet options, and additional dishes could be ordered for an additional fee. We were not happy with the taste of the breakfast so we decided to have breakfast elsewhere.
Conclusion: We can warmly recommend the accommodation.
Since the island is relatively large, it is advisable to rent a means of transport to easily explore the island.
We had rented a car for a week, as it is better and faster to get around than with a quad or scooter.
We paid 260 euros for one week including insurance.
Tip:
We recommend booking a car in advance and collecting and dropping it off directly at the airport.
Laganas Beach
Laganas beach, located in the town of the same name, is very popular due to its location.
Here you will not only find wonderfully clear and blue water, but also many opportunities to relax and enjoy. Many hotels and restaurants have their own beach sections where you can make yourself comfortable on loungers.
The park:
Parking spaces are available and free of charge.
Kalamaki Beach
The 5 km long Kalamaki Beach is one of the longest beach resorts on the island and is known for the turtle nesting sites and the mountains that surround the beach.
The park:
A parking lot is available and free of charge.
Gerakas Beach
Gerakas Beach is a popular turtle beach and a nesting ground for a rare species of turtle called Caretta Caretta, which is why the shoreline is strictly protected.
Shipwreck /- Navagio Beach
Navagio Beach in Zakynthos, also known as Shipwreck Beach, is famous for the shipwreck that ran aground on the coast in 1980 and has been a popular photo opportunity ever since. The beach is only accessible by boat and offers crystal clear waters and an impressive backdrop of high cliffs and rock formations. A smuggler's ship was shipwrecked here in October 1980 due to stormy weather and has been rusting away ever since. The crew was rescued and imprisoned.
We booked a tour to get there (see entry below under "activities").
Xigia Cave/Beach
Xigia Beach is located in a small bay on the north coast of Zakynthos.
The beach consists of white pebbles and the water is clear and blue. A few loungers including umbrellas are offered on the beach.
Above the bay is a gastronomy from which you have a beautiful view of the bay. There are toilets there.
Parking: free on the roadside
Info:
There is a slight sulphurous smell in the air due to sulfur springs in the surrounding sea caves. You get used to it quickly!
Tip: take bathing shoes with you.
Porto Limnionas
The picturesque bay of Porto Limnionas, surrounded by rocks, is accessible via a staircase. It is a real paradise for snorkeling fans because of the crystal clear water. Note, however, that there is limited space. But don't worry, there is a cozy gastronomy that will provide you with two loungers and an umbrella for around 20 euros
Parking: free
Skinari Cape
The Skiari Cape on Zakynthos is a dream come true. Stairs lead down to the sea along the rocks and via a small ladder you can climb into the crystal clear water and swim or snorkel. If you want to relax in between, you can sit down on one of the loungers along the stages and enjoy the beautiful view.
Parking: free

Boat tour to Shipwreck Beach and Blue Caves
Provider: Porto Vromi Maries Kontes Tour

Startort: Porto Vromi Anafonitria

The closer you get to the departure point "Porto Vromi Anafonitria", the cheaper the tour is offered.
From the intermediary in Keri where we bought our tickets, we were sent to the provider "Porto Vromi Maries Kontes Tour".
There we would have had to pay only 20 euros instead of 25 euros per person.
At the stand at the port, only 15 euros were charged for the tour.
(GetYoureGuide charges 30 euros for the same tour from another provider).
Shipwreck Beach viewpoint
Parking : available and free
This motif of the shipwreck is often seen as a typical postcard motif and image for travel offers on Zakynthos.
Unfortunately, there is only a mini viewing platform in front of which tourists frolic and queue to take typical photos of the shipwreck.
We had our drone with us and were able to take many photos and videos with it, which gave us a completely different and more beautiful view of this beach.
Tip: You can admire the sunset there.
